Devdas tells the tragic story of Devdas, a wealthy but emotionally fragile man who grows up deeply in love with his childhood friend Paro. Despite their strong bond, Devdas’s proud family refuses to accept Paro because of social status differences, and Devdas, unable to stand against his family or express his love courageously, pushes Paro away. Heartbroken, Paro is married off to a much older, wealthy widower, forcing her to leave Devdas behind and live a life of duty rather than love. Devdas is consumed by regret and spirals into alcoholism and self-destruction, wandering through life with pain and guilt until he meets the kind-hearted courtesan Chandramukhi, who falls deeply in love with him and tries to help him heal, though Devdas remains emotionally trapped in his love for Paro. Unable to escape his grief, Devdas ultimately drinks himself to death, and in his final moments he fulfills a promise by traveling to see Paro one last time, collapsing outside her mansion gates while she runs toward him but is stopped before she can reach him, leaving their love forever incomplete.
