THDevo performing “Uncontrollable Urge” Live on Fridays
With Brian Eno taking up the producers role for Devo’s debut album, “Q. Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo!, featured a sound that can be considered as the foundation of New Wave but also travels into the realm of Punk Rock & Post-Punk. Way back in 1977 Iggy Pop and David Bowie were in the middle of their Berlin period when they received a demo tape comprising of Devo’s music. The duo were highly impressed and were eager to produce to the album, but in the end Brian Eno was chosen to produce with Bowie assisting. Eno renowned for his work as a producer and innovator in ambient music, played a crucial role in shaping the sound of “Q: Are We Not Men?”. Eno’s influence can be heard in the album’s experimental production techniques, layered synthesizers, and unconventional song structures. His collaboration with Devo brought a level of sonic depth and complexity to the album, pushing the boundaries of traditional rock music. While his contributions to the album are legendary, his contributions weren’t very well accepted by the band as refused to deviate from the raw sound that was featured in their demo tapes.
Nonetheless, the record is hailed for honoring both worlds as it was one of the first to feature the use of synthesizers as an important textural element. While, the instrument does play a minor role in the overall sound of the album, it would soon lay the groundwork for the synth-pop explosion that would take over very soon.
