KAThese are the things I do to get ready:
1. PREP!! This is working through my script analysis, why each scene is in the movie and the characters goals and obstacles. Write all of this down and out so I’m not worried about it on the day, in the moment.
2. Refresh myself with Notes on Directing by Frank Hauser. It’s a little blue book with loads of info on how to be the best director you can be from prepping, to your presence on set. Great reminders and I reread it all the time.
3. Exercise, literally exercise. Don’t overdo it, if you’ve never run don’t start running marathons…but keep your energy levels up, working out or going on a walk consistently the weeks leading up to a shoot will give you the energy ON the shoot to have the endurance to get through those 12 hour days without fatigue.
4. Sleep!!!! Go to bed!!! Prepping into the night isn’t helping anyone and it’s just making you tired and also making it possible for you to get sick. Take care of yourself!
5. Watch reference movies. It keeps me in the creative mindset and reminds me of the tone that I am working to achieve.
6. Rehearsal with actors! We run through the script and get it on its feet. My DP @waradp and I will film it as well, to pre visualize the film and cut it together before the camera on set begin to roll.
7. Last minute departments checks. I want to touch base with wardrobe, art, and production to make sure we are all on the same page!! And make myself available for anything that they may need from me.
