Stills are actually able to induce multiple distillation-condensation cycles in a single pass. Alcohol vapours can condensate and redistill at a higher strength inside the still. Some stills are better at forcing these “mini redistillations” than others and so are able to produce higher strength and more pure spirit. Video : reflux column in action

Distillation teaches you very quickly that everything is connected. Change one small variable and the entire run changes. A little more heat shifts the pace of the vapor. A condenser that is slightly warmer changes how the oil separates. Packing the condenser with more ice can tighten the whole system and pull a different profile out of the resin. Even the size of the resin pieces or how the still is loaded can influence what comes through the spout. This is the butterfly effect of distillation. Small adjustments ripple through the entire process. After enough runs you realize the still is not just a machine. It is a living system of heat water copper and plant material all responding to each other in real time. I post a lot of videos of distillation and most of what you see is sped up. 10 times. 100 times. That is not the truth of this work. The truth is still sitting. Hours of it. Presence without distraction. Copper distilling is not a plug and play system. It is an instrument that asks something of you. You do not set it and walk away. You stay with it. You listen. The still hums if you are quiet enough. It sings when the vapor is right. It carries a vibration that changes with heat water resin and time. The plant has a spirit and it moves through copper slowly. You cannot rush it without losing something essential. Every time you get comfortable and think you can step away the still will remind you why you are there. Most of my distillations last 14 to 24 hours. I am with the still the entire time. I have had runs go 36 hours. I have slept on the floor beside it. Long nights. Long days. Fire burning. Water moving. Nothing else asking for attention. What people do not see is that while the plant is being distilled something else is happening at the same time. You are being distilled too. The still strips away impatience. It refines your listening. It teaches restraint. It brings you into alignment with a slower law that the universe already follows. Stay. Pay attention. Do not force what needs time. This is why I share so much of the process. If you feel called to sit next to a still for a full day and night then this path might be for you. This is a slow road. Distilling is only one facet of it. The deeper work is presence. The refinement happens on both sides of the fire. I speed up the videos because I have come to love the challenge of telling a story that takes hours in 7 to 10 seconds. But it also lets me set the camera and let it run while I stay focused on the work itself without thinking about content. #SmokeWalkers #frankincense #frankincenseoil #distilling

Behind the scenes, it’s not all tasting notes and barrel aging—sometimes, it’s three people, three hours, and one very stubborn gasket. In this time-lapse, we’re cracking open our custom Carl pot still for some essential TLC. The gasket is a small but critical component that helps keep the still sealed during distillation. A tight seal ensures we can maintain proper pressure and temperature control, which ultimately means cleaner, more precise distillate in the glass. It might look like just a piece of rubber, but in the world of craft distillation, a perfect seal is the difference between a high-quality distillate and a wasted run. Three of our crew members spent about 3 hours carefully disassembling, replacing, reseating, and testing the gasket to make sure everything was running exactly as it should. When we say “hand-crafted,” we mean every bolt, every seal, and every spirit. I wanted to see what would happen if I leaned into the resin instead of just protecting the bright top notes. Higher heat changes the character. You drive off volatiles faster and you start pulling deeper into the heavier body of the resin. The oil shifts. It becomes darker. More resinous. Less citrus lift and more depth. More shadow. It is not better or worse. It is a different expression of the same tree. That is the beauty of copper and fire. A distillation almost always ends late not because it runs long but because this work asks you to stay until the last thing is finished. When the heat is turned off and the still goes quiet the work is not over. That is when the pot is opened and the resin comes back into view changed by water heat and time. This is spent resin. It is not waste. It has been taken through a digestive process in the still where the gums soften and the structure opens. What remains is heavy and grounded. This is where boswellic acids live. These compounds are too heavy to ever move with steam or become essential oil. They stay here in the body of the resin. After the still is emptied the resin is laid out and dried slowly. This step matters. Drying stabilizes the material and prepares it for what comes next whether that is infusion extraction or further work. Without this stage the resin cannot be worked properly and its value is lost. This part of the process rarely gets seen. Everyone wants the oil. Few talk about what is left behind. But in many ways this is the deeper material. The part that works slowly and supports long held places. Endings matter. What you do after the fire goes out matters.
