IS• does anyone else feel overwhelmed trying to edit your drafts? These little tips have assisted me so much and can relieve the stress of editing.
What is helpful for you?
➤ The 1 to 5 method
When sorting through editing comments, rank them on the amount of work required to complete each. For example, 1 would be little tweaks whereas 5 could be rewriting or adding a new scene.
➤ Break up your chapters
For chapters with sections ranked 5, set aside a time block to focus solely on those edits. For example, on one day you could focus on chapters 3 and 4, while another could be chapters 18 and 19.
➤ Have a physical piece of paper next to you
I find when rewriting scenes, ideas flow so much better to me when I ditch the device and write them down. We spend so much time glued to a laptop, a break like this really helps stimulate the creativity flow.
➤ Take the time to fill in plot holes
If you can’t explain something in your story in a few sentences, then you probably need to fill in some gaps. Of course, with book genres such as fantasy, the lore of the world can get so complex, but if you were your character living in those worlds, it would just be every day life for you. You need to understand it as much as they do! That way, your readers won’t be overwhelmed.

KIJust stop. Your first draft cannot compare to all the published books you read.
Not because it's bad.
Not because you can't write.
Because a published book is the final product. Edited. Corrected. Editted and corrected again. We'd all be surprised to see the first drafts of our favourite books. It's just how it works. The first draft can be messy, with plot holes, it's just the core or the spine on which you can build further.
A messy first draft is better than none.
How do you work with your first draft? Do you polish as you go, or do you just write it all down to improve later? Whatever works for you. I do try for my draft to be "nice", but the writing improves as you go, so the first chapters are not as good as the last ones.

SAif you have a ton of drafts, what that tells me is this thing matters to you. you took the time to create something. multiple things, actually. but you don’t take yourself seriously enough to share it with the world.
now for some people, it may not be that deep. you’re just here to chill and have fun, and that’s fine.
but if that’s not you… if deep down you know this means more to you than you’re letting on… then please, don’t let your drafts be where your dreams go to die.
