Postpartum foot drop—here’s what’s actually happening 👣 Foot drop after pregnancy is rare, but when it happens it’s usually not from pregnancy itself. It’s most often related to temporary nerve compression during labor. During delivery, prolonged pushing, positioning, or reduced awareness from an epidural can place pressure on the peroneal nerve near the outside of the knee—or stretch nerves coming from the pelvis. When that nerve gets irritated, the muscles that lift the foot don’t fire well → foot drop. Most postpartum foot drop cases are neuropraxia (a temporary nerve issue), meaning recovery is very likely with time and the right rehab. 🎯 If you’re interested in working with us, sign-up for a free consultation using the link in our bio. #postartum #dropfoot #footdrop #physicaltherapy #pregnancy

🧠 Foot drop is typically the result of a nerve, brain or spinal cord injury resulting in partial or full paralysis of the anterior tibialis muscle which is responsible for dorsiflexing (lifting) the foot. The primary nerve affected is the deep peroneal nerve This can also occur due to a peripheral nerve injury/compression to the peroneal nerve, or various neurological disorders such as stroke and multiple sclerosis. ❗️In clinic, you can assess innervation of specific peripheral nerves via use of Neuromuscular Electrical Stimulation unit. If further and more specific testing is warranted, a patient can complete a Nerve Conduction Study which needs to be done by the patients neurologist❗️ . . 🧠 The exercises listed above are some of my favorite to use in clinic. They are effective in addressing both muscular endurance and strengthening of the anterior tibialis muscle. This includes higher level and lower level exercises depending on the amount of . Other exercises not listed above include * HITT alone or coupled with NMES has shown great benefits as long as their is at least partial innervation of the muscle * Use of electrical stimulation (NMES) can be beneficial if utilized with functional activities and not just as a stand alone treatment . . 🧠 Less common causes of foot drop not related to the brain or spinal cord are ▫️Diabetes (severe neuropathy) ▫️Crossing your legs or excessive kneeling can compress the peroneal nerve . . ❗️If you have complete paralysis or no ability to lift your foot, you likely need to be evaluated by a physical therapist to discuss options for bracing and/or other therapeutic techniques to help with functional recovery.❗️ . . 📖 Stat Pearls for Foot Drop https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/books/NBK554393/ . . 🎵 Music: Sunshine State Musician: AI music . . . #neurorehab #neuropt #neuronerd #neurorecovery #footdrop #dropfoot #anteriorribialis #afo #orthotics #resistancetraining #gaittraining #gait #balance #hemiplegia #balancetraining #balancefitness #strokerehab #strokerecovery #multiplesclerosis #strokewarrior #multiplesclerosiswarrior #msresearch #braininjury #physicaltherapy #physiotherapy #dptstudents #dptstudent #dpt

Footage from 2022 National Foot Drop Awareness event. 🙌💙 Candee attended the @Physiofunction Foot Drop Clinic with @blatchfordgrp on #nationalfootdropawarenessday for an assessment. Candee suffered a Stroke when she was just 7 years old which left her with #footdrop and described the Turbomed Xtern AFO as “Fantastic’” saying it eliminated her foot drop, made her leg less heavy and easier to lift. As you can see the results of using the Turbmomed Xtern AFO are incredible. On the 22nd September, @physiofunction & @blatchfordgrp will be offering free assessments for a limited number of people with suspected footdrop. Let’s talk foot drop 🐾 Info from: @mayoclinic for educational purposes only Description: A video of my legs while walking down a sidewalk. I'm wearing blue jeans with black AFO braces over them. I also have on adaptive black tennis shoes. As I walk, information about foot drop/ drop foot appears. The information reads: - Let's talk about foot drop - Foot drop (or drop foot) is a general term for difficulty lifting the front part of the foot. - If you have foot drop, the front of your foot might drag on the ground when you walk. - Foot drop is a symptom and a sign of an underlying neurological, muscular or anatomical problem. - If you have foot drop, you may need to wear a brace on your ankle and foot to support the foot and hold it in position. Next, is a video of my legs straight up while lying in bed. I demonstrate how my right foot struggles more to lift upward and how it's hard to move my toes up and down. #FootDrop #DropFoot #BracedBabe #AFOwningIt #AnkleFootOrthotics #AFOs #AFOBraces #LegBrace #Orthotics #Mobility #MobilityAids #BabeWithAMobilityAid #Disabled #Disability #DisabilityAdvocate #DisabilityPride #DisabledJoy #DisabilityRepresentation #EhlersDanlosSyndrome #Reels #IGReels #ReelsInstagram #Educational

Foot drop, sometimes called drop foot, is a general term for difficulty lifting the front part of the foot. If you have foot drop, the front of your foot might drag on the ground when you walk. Signs and symptoms Foot drop makes it difficult to lift the front part of the foot, so it might drag on the floor when you walk. To help the foot clear the floor, a person with foot drop may raise the thigh more than usual when walking, as though climbing stairs. This unusual kind of walking, called steppage gait, might cause the foot to slap down onto the floor with each step. So these exercises and muscle stimulator to train tibialis anterior muscle is done #footdrop #dropfoot #rehab #footexercises #walk #clearground #physiotherapy #ortho #clinicview #vibes #instagram #trending #relief

Drop Foot Quick Fix 🦶 Ok so before I start, I want to mention that drop foot can be a very severe condition which would require a lot of work and depending on whether we are talking about nerve damage, the rehab can be different. In this video, I will show you a way to release and help you with symptoms of drop foot where the muscles innervated by the peroneal nerve are simply not working at full capacity, or due to nerve compression somewhere along the nerve pathway, they are not getting sufficient brain signal. Yes, just like sciatica and other nerve related injuries, drop foot can also sometimes be down to simple muscular compression on the nerve tissue and not necessarilly down to nerve damage or more serious injuries. Of course, drop foot can also be due to a disk injury, pressing on the peroneal roots of the sciatic nerve - that is also a common consequence that follows or happens simultaneously with sciatica. But, sometimes nerve compression can be down to tightness in the peroneal muscles, or TFL muscle even, putting pressure on the iTB. These can cause the superficial aspect of the peroneal nerve to respond by not being able to transfer the signal from the brain all the way into the muscles responsible for dorsiflexion - drop foot is a condition or symptoms of it, where the foot is unable to lift up (dorsi-flex). Such muscles that will be affected here are the anterior tibialis, extensor digitorum, extensor hallucis longus, fibularis longus and brevis. If the pereonal nerve branches are damaged ore compressed, you may lose the ability to dorsiflex, evert the foot, and extend the digits. You may also lose sensation in the muscles descbired above. This leads to another injury that sometimes accompanies drop foot - ski boot syndrome. The resulting neuritis and synovitis may be severe enough to mimick an anterior compartment syndrome. TW graphic content. Not many people run ultra marathons. And I don’t know of anyone else who runs them with a leg injury like this. Had the privilege this weekend to crew my brother in his 100k ultra marathon. He had an accident years ago that left him with nerve damage and drop foot. Any prolonged time on his feet causes nerve pain and other issues. He’s been looking for a good ultra to test his limits and picked the hardest 100k in the US, 65 miles and 16,000 ft of gain, all done at an average elevation of 10,000 ft. We get nervous when he tests his limits and have a hard time watching him in pain, but we definitely weren’t going to let him go alone. I’m extremely grateful I got to be so close to him through the race and run a section with him. I got to watch and feel him fight for the miles towards the finish line. The elevation took a toll and the many necessary pauses to let his foot rest added up. We missed the last aid station cutoff by 15 minutes. He covered 60 miles with 15,000 ft of vert, missing out on the last 5 miles of the race. I’m inspired, proud, humbled, and grateful. With every excuse to not go through something so difficult, he seeks it out and lives through it. #ultrarunners #trailrunninglife #ultrarunninglife #runoutside #runmotivation #mountainrun #dropfoot #footdrop #footdroprunners
