STJunk mail. It’s not all bad.
This #GlobalRecyclingDay we’re highlighting one of our more unusual ephemera collections.
In 2007 we received a large donation of junk mail delivered at a Sydney home over the course of one year.
The material – which included flyers, brochures and advertisements – weighs a whopping 28kgs and fills 8 archival boxes.
The Library continues to collect ephemera to document our history for future generations.
In particular, we are looking for ephemera relating to:
🏘️ Residential housing developments
🥡 Menus for local restaurants & cafes
♻️ Recycling & renewables
If you have any material you’d like to donate, please send it to:

JEDo you like the authentic look of grungy and tattered ephemera? I am going to show you a trick to make your printables look like the real deal! Make sure you print your documents on regular printer paper. Cardstock is too thick for the 1800's.

DATake a stroll through the British countryside in 1829 with this antique tunnel book. ⏳
The title on the face of this reads, “A Peep At The Fox Chace” 🦊
Each of the tunnel books in my collection have unique characteristics, and this one has a dedication from one person to another handwritten on the back in 1836. ✍️
This aquatint was hand cut and hand colored to create the 3-D effect. 🙌
Aquatints generally give more range of tones than simple copper etchings. They were made with tiny particles of sap heated on the copper plate, and then washed with acid. 🌲
The plates were formed in that way, and then multiple copies were printed. But each one had to be hand colored and hand cut to form the colorful tunnel affect that you see here. 🎨👨🎨
The effect is quite magical. 💫
