Existential OCD is a subtype of OCD that involves obsessions (repetitive, intrusive thoughts and images) about the meaning of life, reality, existence, etc. . Some questions are answerable (ex. are we living in a dream) while others aren’t (ex. what is the meaning of life) and require true uncertainty. . The obsessions are all-consuming and the person cannot stop having the existential intrusive thoughts and images no matter how much they want to. This is not someone with passing existential thoughts or a person who enjoys philosophizing. This is a person tormented by thoughts and images they don’t even want to be having or thinking about. . Further, they feel the urge to perform compulsive rituals to solve obsessions, alleviate distress from the obsessions, prevent a dreaded outcome from occurring, etc. that only pull them further into OCD and create more anxiety and confusion. . If this is you, know that there is effective treatment for OCD. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) is a frontline treatment for OCD 💜 . . . . . . . . . . . . . #ocd #obsessivecompulsivedisorder #ocdawareness #ocdrecovery #intrusivethoughts #existentialocd #existential #erp #pocd #harmocd #neurodivergent #cptsd #traumahealjng #ocdmemes #therapymemes #ocdhelp #ocdsupport #anxiety #mentalhealthmemes #ocdproblems #panicattack #derealization #derealizationocd

Has anyone else been in this situation?! First of all, if you have been told this, l’d like to apologize on behalf of the person who said it 🚩 Second of all, let’s review: Mental 👏🏻Compulsions 👏🏻Are 👏🏻Real👏🏻 On the outside, it may look like nothing is wrong. On the inside, it’s a constant hamster wheel situation. At least, that’s what it was like for me. It can be so horribly isolating. Guess what though? Mental compulsions are no less treatable than physical, external compulsions! Sure, they may be sneakier, but that doesn’t mean you’re incapable of kicking them to the curb 💪🏻 To catch mental compulsions, you have to separate the initial thought (usually accompanied by some kind of “what if” question) from the thinking (the voluntary behavior you conjure up in response). You also need to figure out how you are justifying the behaviors. What makes it hard to let go? And finally, commit to not answering OCD/anxiety’s initial question. Non-engagement strategies are your new best friend. For example, some of my favorites are: “Dang, that would suck” “Maybe, maybe not” “Welp, I guess we’ll never know” “I’m not answering that question” “LOL, ok” “Bring it on” Have you ever felt stuck in your mental compulsions? Which ones do you struggle the most with? Save this for when you need the reminder, and follow @ocdrebeltherapist for more info on gaining freedom from OCD/anxiety💪🏻 • #OCD #OcdRecovery #anxietyrelief #anxietysupport #ocdwarrior #ocdsupport

Many of us might jokingly claim to have ‘OCD’ when we spend an afternoon organizing a bookshelf or meticulously arranging kitchen utensils. It’s a common misunderstanding that equates obsessive-compulsive tendencies with simple orderliness or cleanliness. However, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a complex and often debilitating condition that goes much deeper than these everyday organizing quirks. Among its various forms, compulsive organizing is a prominent subtype, where individuals feel an overwhelming need to arrange objects in an excessively precise manner. This isn’t just about preference; it’s a compulsion driven by intense anxiety, requiring that items be aligned according to very specific rules and patterns. Another significant aspect of OCD involves compulsive thoughts, or obsessions. These are intrusive, persistent thoughts or images that trigger intense distress. To neutralize these thoughts, individuals engage in mental acts or rituals, known as compulsions. For example, a person might repeatedly reassure themselves that they’ve turned off the oven or washed their hands sufficiently to ward off harm. These compulsions are time-consuming and often interfere significantly with the individual’s daily functioning and quality of life. If you or someone you know is struggling with OCD symptoms, professional help can make a significant difference. Cognitive-behavioral therapy is especially effective. Don’t wait to seek the support that can vastly improve daily functioning and quality of life. If you have OCD you may have gone through a period of time when you’re content was all about “going crazy” or “losing control” or what I went through- a major fear of psychosis. At the time, I constantly questioned whether or not I was in a psychosis. I would ask the people around me if they were hearing/seeing/experiencing the same things as I was. I would question whether or not I was “really here”. I sought out therapy to get a solid answer on *if I was in a psychosis or not. I WAS NOT. Despite being evaluated and told that what I was experiencing was extreme anxiety due to OCD, I still felt an unquenchable feeling on uncertainty about it. But that’s the nature of OCD. It creates such a need for certainty that even when we know for sure, it still feels like we can’t possible be sure. Every once in awhile my OCD will revert back to this theme and I’ll start looking for certainty about it...again. And every time I ask my therapist about it she responds perfectly with “Maybe you were!” It leaves me wanting more but we both know that if she were to give me reassurance about the topic, my obsession would just come back stronger. #realocd #intruaivethoughts #wellneverknow #uncertainty #anxietyproblems #ocdawareness #existentialocd #isthisreal

The content of your obsessions isn’t the problem. The problem is your brain’s difficulty coping with doubt and uncertainty + your lack of trust in your ability to cope with hard things. Until these things are addressed, there will always be another obsession. (Hi OCD Wack-a-mole) This is what we mean when we say “the content doesn’t matter.” OCD is OCD is OCD. Here’s what you need to do: 1. Stop avoiding things 2. Resist your compulsions 3. Intentionally do things to go outside of your comfort zone . . . . . . . . . . #ocd #intrusivethoughts #anxiety #ocdrecovery #ocdproblems #mentalcompulsions #compulsions #avoidance #erp #faceyourfears #chappellroan #therapisttip

Don’t take OCD so seriously. You might even want to experiment with letting go of calling your experience OCD altogether. Whether the label came from a professional or from Googling your symptoms, once you started calling it OCD, your relationship with your thoughts and experience shifted. Many people are innocently taught to make it a much bigger deal than it needs to be.
Something permanent. Something to manage forever. It’s not just the thoughts.
It’s the response to them. You’re told to monitor yourself.
To check whether you’re seeking reassurance.
To watch for compulsions. So now every thought comes with pressure.
Pressure to handle it right.
Pressure to not make it worse.
Pressure to stay in control. That constant self-monitoring is what keeps the system revved up. Relief doesn’t come from policing your thoughts or your responses.
It comes from understanding how thinking works and letting the mind do what minds do without treating it like a threat. When that understanding settles in, thoughts can show up and nothing has to happen.
No fixing. No checking. No spiral. Life starts to feel lighter, not because every thought is perfect or positive, but because you’re no longer afraid of your own mind.
