MYIf you grew up in the San Gabriel Valley, you probably remember Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour on Rosemead Blvd! This iconic spot was the ultimate destination for birthdays and family outings, serving up larger-than-life sundaes and shakes. From colossal creations like “The Zoo” to the daring “Pig’s Trough,” Farrell’s was all about making every visit a celebration.
The sounds of old-time piano music, servers in vintage attire, and the joyous birthday parades made Farrell’s a truly unforgettable experience. Although the parlour has closed, leaving behind sweet memories, its spirit lives on. Today, the location is home to Harbour Seafood Restaurant, continuing the tradition of delighting visitors.

MYFarewell to Farrell’s
Farrell’s Ice Cream Parlour once delighted the San Gabriel Valley crowd at 3939 Rosemead Boulevard, just south of Valley Boulevard—a hub of birthday parties, towering sundaes, player pianos, and vintage charm. Open in the early 1970s, this Rosemead spot offered an unforgettable mix of old-school soda fountain nostalgia, newspaper-style menus, and celebratory sirens whenever someone conquered a Pig’s Trough sundae or the legendary “Zoo” with 50 scoops and plastic animal toppers.
Farrell’s wasn’t just dessert—it was an experience. A place where birthdays felt like big productions, and every kid got a pick-a-pin or ribbon declaring, “I made a pig of myself at Farrell’s.”
In its heyday, the chain peaked with over 120 locations nationwide, including the Rosemead storefront that anchored local memories until the mid-2000s. Despite a brief revival in Southern California in the 2000s, the final Farrell’s closed its doors in 2019, marking the end of an era for ice cream spectacle.
Farrell’s began in Portland in 1963, founded by Bob Farrell and Ken McCarthy. The original menu included joke diet meals like “bees knees and mosquito knuckles,” with the motto that anything worth eating has calories. The enormous “Zoo” sundae was delivered with sirens and a team of servers carrying it on a stretcher for maximum impact.
The Rosemead location sat on Rosemead Boulevard and is now home to a seafood restaurant, though locals still reminisce about the giant rooster sign that may trace back to Farrell’s decor. Farrell’s also gave back to the community—donating to charities like Make‑A‑Wish, and creating a space where, as many remember, “everyone was a winner.”
