A short film written by Rowan and his best friend Richard Curtis, this piece of dark comedy features a young man trying desperately to experience as much life as possible in half an hour. He listens to classical music, looks at famous art, and reads the story of War and Peace (by way of the book’s back cover). He also sets out to find love.
The film also includes in its cast many of Rowan’s good friends. There are cameo appearances from Richard Curtis himself, Tim McInnerny (Blackadder’s Percy and Darling), Nigel Planer and Ade Edmondson (of The Young Ones fame), Jim Broadbent (who later guest-starred memorably in Blackadder), and Leslie Ash (who was Rowan’s girlfriend at the time).
You can watch Dead on Time in its entirety on YouTube! It’s such a fun look into Rowan’s early career, with lots of moments reminiscent of many of his future iconic characters.
