Solubility. • In chemistry, solubility is the ability of a substance, the solute, to form a solution with another substance, the solvent. Insolubility is the opposite property, the inability of the solute to form such a solution. • Both silver nitrate and sodium chloride have good solubility in solution, of course, this is dependant on equilibrium and other factors such as temperature and pressure, but roughly speaking, we have two completely dissolved compounds. • When mixed together, a white precipitate immediately forms as Silver chloride, AgCl, is formed in the following reaction: • AgNo₃ + NaCl -> AgCl + NaNo₃ • The low solubility of AgCl is something the other silver halides share in common with it, increasing in its insolubility as you read down the halogens group ( AgBr is less soluble than AgCl, AgI is less soluble than AgBr). With this trait, it is incredibly easy to filter out the synthesised product. • Just like it’s oxide cousin, silver chloride also decomposes to silver and elemental chlorine when heated. And with a tertiary halide, shouldn’t OH⁻ prefer E2 elimination and form an alkene instead? Since tertiary carbocations are stable, SN1 is possible… But because OH⁻ is strong, E2 should strongly compete, right? So how can we confidently say substitution (SN1) dominates?
