🚤 Ferry to Bear Island 🚤 After being closed for over a year for facility upgrades, the Hammocks Beach State Park ferry to Bear Island is officially OPEN — and the island’s restrooms & water stations are up and running! 📍 1572 Hammocks Beach Rd. Swansboro, NC 28584 📅 Wednesday–Sunday (until Memorial Day)
⏰ Leaves every hour on the half hour, Return ferry runs every hour on the hour
💰 Adults $10 | Kids (3–12) & Seniors $5 | 2 & under = FREE (buy at Visitor’s Center) 🌊 After the ferry, it’s a 15-min walk to the beach — but volunteers run golf cart shuttles with priority for guests with mobility needs 🧳 What to Pack:
We liked to pack light, but a collapsible wagon or stroller is a game-changer for the ½-mile walk if you have little ones. Bring: Bug spray Binoculars (great for birding & dolphin spotting)

Since it’s an island, you can either take the ferry over and walk about a 1/2 mile to the beach, or kayak in. Would you camp here? 😍 📍 Bear Island at Hammocks Beach State Park 📝 Please note that Bear Island is only accessible by boat, and the campsites are *primitive hike-in* campsites. Therefore, planning is SUPER important! Once you’re out there, you can’t just hop in your car and run to the store. Also, there are no trashcans on the island. That means you need to be prepared to pack out *everything* you pack in! 🏕️ You must camp at a designated campsite! You can reserve a campsite on the Hammocks Beach State Park website. 🔥 Fires are NOT permitted on Bear Island! 🛶 You can get there via the state park ferry (what I did for $10 roundtrip), kayak/canoe, or a private ferry. 🐶 Dogs are allowed on Bear Island but not the state park ferry, so you’ll need to make special arrangements to get out there if you want to bring your pup! 🦟 Pack your bug spray! There weren’t many mosquitos out when I went in early June but the flies were a little pesky. I was thankful that the breeze kept the bugs at bay for the most part! I’ve heard the bugs can be pretty gnarly. _ If you’re new here, hi 👋🏼 My name is Maddy. I was born and raised in North Carolina and currently live in Asheville!
