We always prioritize compound movements first and find heavy, loadable variations preferable, However when it comes to finding movements like the hamstring curl, we have to get more creative without a leg curl machine. These are a few of the variations I use most frequently when attempting to isolate the hamstrings through knee flexion rather than. hip extension.

The Best Hamstring Exercise You’re NOT Doing! [Must Try] … I shared this exercise a few months back, but I wanted to re-share it because I’ve become an even bigger fan now that I’ve programmed it (and received feedback from dozens of clients and lifters worldwide) for over a year. . Here’s 3 reasons why these “Inverted/Bodyweight Swinging Leg Curls” have become a staple in my programming: . 1️⃣ They train BOTH functions of the hamstrings [hip extension & knee flexion] . 2️⃣ The contraction/stimulus on the MUSCLE is intense, yet it’s extremely easy on the joints & low-back . 3️⃣ It allows you to train knee flexion [at home] without having to spend thousands of dollars on a Leg Curl Machine. (Plus, it doesn’t take up any space in my home gym :)) . 📝PROGRAMMING NOTE: Once you build up enough strength to be able to execute 3 sets of 12+ (pristine) reps, I recommend overloading this exercise by placing chain(s) over your waist, wearing a weight vest or applying band resistance. . Nordic hamstring curls 🔥 set up instructions if you don’t have the machine at your gym: 1️⃣ Load a barbell with weight. How much depends on your body weight and the surface the barbell is on. For most people, 135lb minimum is suggested. 2️⃣ Put a squat pad on the barbell, or some sort of soft padding for your ankles. 3️⃣ Roll the barbell against a rack, so the rack is in the middle of the barbell. 4️⃣ Place heavy dumbbells in front of the plates. How much depends once again on body weight and surface the barbell is on but 50-80lb is a general range to play around with. 5️⃣ Put a knee cushion on the ground or any soft cushion to protect your knees. 6️⃣ If you need assistance (I mean don’t all of us?😂) wrap a heavy band around the rack. 7️⃣ Place band around upper body, ankles under the barbell, and knees on the cushion 8️⃣ Curl!🔥 #hamstrings #lowerbodyworkout #gymrat

Don’t have a lying hamstring curl machine in your gym?? Try this instead!⬇️ Dumbbell hamstring curls are great because they force you to control the weight and feel your hamstrings throughout the entire movement, otherwise if you forcefully go too high or too low when doing these, you’ll drop the weight on your butt or on the floor, so a slower controlled motion is necessary. When doing the hamstring curl machine, I see SO many people throwing the pad around into their butt with their hips shooting up and they’re using so much other muscles to complete the reps.. don’t be this person.. but if you need a reminder on how to do these correctly.. go check out my previous form video on them! Now with dumbbell hamstring curls, the form remains the same, but here’s a few tips⬇️ ▶️Form Tips ✅Start with the tops of your knees up against the pad, this position may vary a little person to person but try to start and this and see what feels best for you ✅Keep your hips pushing into the pad, think about squeezing your glutes to help keep your hips tucked ✅Squeeze your toes together to help secure the dumbbell ✅Control the weight throughout the entire motion not going tooo high or tooo low. You’ll feel it when your not stable and balanced between legs so be intentional with your movement You can also do these laying directly on the ground, you’ll just get a little less range of motion, but they also work too! Hamstring curls, also known as leg curls, are isolation exercises that target the hamstring muscles on the backs of your legs. . TIP: make sure you’re engaging your core. A lot of the times we focus so much on our legs and curling our legs up that we let our midsection go without maintaining control of our core. Keeping your core engage and maintaining a flat back during this exercise is key to doing it properly. . Too much weight and an unengaged core (aka poor form) can cause pressure on the lower back and lower back pain. . Summary: Activate your core and keep your back straight as you bend your knees. Lift your lower legs closer to your glutes, pausing at the top of the movement, and extend them slowly back down. .
