👉 Don’t ignore the last one. Now, there is an important reason I made this video when high functioning depression is not a clinical diagnosis. The term is being used across the Internet as people search for the language to describe their daily struggles with mental health. I think what this term has enabled many people to do, is acknowledge that depression does not begin on the day that you can’t get out of bed. You can be suffering intensely while going about your normal daily routine. If we wait until we cannot function before seeking help or working on recovery, we have a much bigger battle on our hands. So even if everyone in your life has no idea, the best time to work on your mental health is as soon as you notice these changes. 👉 For more on this you can pre-order my new book - Open When… (link in bio) or if you don’t have it already check out my million copy bestselling book - Why Has Nobody Told Me This Before? (Currently -50% see link in bio). Filled with insights from therapy about how to deal with real life problems. Available in over 40 languages!

📚 book & podcast recs 👇 Note: burnout is not technically a medical diagnosis, and reputable hard data is hard to come by, but there are experts in the field who have conducted fantastic and helpful research! I have personally worked through burnout & have helped MANY people work past it as well to create a life where they can work hard, yet feel relaxed and joyful at the same time. More resources I love: 📝 Research: MBI Research & Test — Christina Maslach created this — it’s considered the gold-standard clinical tool for measuring burnout. 📖 Book: Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle by Emily, PhD & Amelia Nagoski, DMA (sisters!) 📖 Book: The Happiness Files by Arthur Brooks 🎙️ Podcast: 10% Happier by Dan Harris 🎙️ Podcast: The Happiness Lab by Dr. Laurie Santos 📖 Book: High Functioning Depression by Dr. Judith Joseph 📖 Book: How to Keep House While Drowning by KC Davis LPC 📖 Book: The Cure for Burnout by Emily Bruth You got this 👏 you’re on the cusp of something great! #burnout #stress #careeradvice not medical advice, obviously! there is always help, talk to someone 🫶🏼

I think I’ve been realizing lately that I’ve been depressed and just didn’t know it. I always thought depression meant you’re constantly sad or crying, but apparently, it can look like me. You can still laugh, show up, go to work, do school drop-offs, plan activities, hang with friends…and still feel kind of numb inside. And honestly, for a lot of us in caregiving roles; moms, nannies, teachers, that version hits way too close to home. We spend so much time caring for everyone else that we don’t always stop long enough to notice when we’re running on empty ourselves. We brush it off as burnout or being tired or needing a weekend, but sometimes it’s more than that. That’s all I’ve got for now. But realizing and naming it is a start. #mentalhealthawareness #mentalhealthmatters #highfunctioningdepression #itsoktonotbeok #nannylife #caregiverlife

Comment “help” and I will send you the quiz so you can learn more about possible symptoms of high functioning depress!on ❤️‍🩹💌 Do you know someone like this? 🙋🏾‍♀️ People with high functioning depression sometimes aren’t even aware that they are depressed. Men and women busy themselves to distract from emotional pain.😢 People think that depression has to lead to impairments in your functioning but this is not the case. If your depression causes significant distress and you are still functioning, you still meet criteria for depression. 👩‍💻👨🏽‍💻 Many people with HFD don’t enjoy things the way they used to and feel compelled to live “all work and no play” lives because they derive a sense of purpose from their work identity. However, they don’t prioritize the simple pleasures that bring joy to life. 🫂 Disclaimer: You may want to consider diagnosis and treatment of symptoms with a licensed medical professional. High functioning depression is when individuals experience depressive symptoms but are able to maintain their daily functioning and responsibilities. While it’s not an official diagnosis, some people use the term to describe a form of depression that may not be immediately apparent to others. People struggling with high functioning depression often face challenges because their internal emotional state doesn’t align with their external appearance or achievements. The pressure to appear okay can make it difficult for them to seek support or even recognize the need for help. Coping statues include: 1. Mindfulness and Self-Care: Incorporating mindfulness practices and self-care routines can be beneficial. This might involve activities like meditation, yoga, or simply setting aside time for activities that bring joy and relaxation. At first, the joy won’t come but it’s important to still work through it. 2. Telling loved ones: Sharing feelings with trusted friends, family, or a partner can create connection and understanding. 3. Setting realistic goals: don’t try to do too much at once. Breaking down tasks into smaller, manageable goals can make daily responsibilities more achievable. Focusing on realistic expectations and acknowledging achievements, no matter how small, 4. Somatic work: Exploring somatic or body-based approaches, such as exercise, dance, or other forms of physical activity, can be beneficial. Physical movement can contribute to the release of endorphins, promoting a positive impact on mood. . . . #mentalhealth #anxiety #trauma #unhealedtrauma #depression #stress #ptsd #complextrauma #cptsd #motivation #procrastination #wellness #therapy #therapist #mentalhealthmatters #socialanxiety #bpd #bipolar #dsm #adhd

High-functioning depression doesn't look like what people think depression looks like. You're not in bed all day. You're at work, at the gym, at your kid's soccer game. You're answering emails, making dinner, keeping it together. From the outside, you look fine. Productive, even. Successful. But inside? You're numb. Exhausted. Going through the motions of a life that doesn't feel like yours anymore. And here's the cruelest part: You can't ask for help because your life looks too put-together. You don't "qualify" as struggling. So you keep going. Keep performing. Keep pushing through. If this is you, here's what I want you to know: You don't have to be visibly suffering to deserve support. Your pain doesn't need to look a certain way to be real. And surviving isn't the same as living.

High-functioning depression is not a clinical or diagnosed depression. High functioning depression is when you have symptoms of low mood, sadness, and other depressive symptoms. What distinguishes high functioning depression from other forms of depression is that individuals with these symptoms often maintain a relatively high level of functionality in their daily lives. Signs of High-Functioning Depression: 1) Deep sense of sadness - leaving you feeling isolated, disconnected, lonely, nothing fulfils you, a feeling of being empty. But getting on with everyday life to cope. 2) Lack of interest or pleasure in activities you once enjoyed 3) Masking symptoms - putting on a facade of “happiness” and functionality in public and hiding how they really feel. 4) Eacapism - activities like binge watching tv, excessive internet use, or substance use may be more common to cope. 5) Difficulty concentrating - trouble concentrating and making decisions or staying focused on tasks, even though you manage to fulfil your responsibilities. 6) Persistent self doubt - there is a tendency towards self criticism, feelings of guilt or inadequacy and a negative self image. 7) Social Isolation and a deep sense of Loneliness - gradually withdraw from social activities, preferring to spend more time alone even though you continue to maintain some social connections. 8) Physical Symptoms including fatigue, headaches and stomach aches, leading to a lack of energy and/or irritability and exhaustion. 9) Emotional Numbness - or a feeling of being disconnected from your own feelings and the world around you. 10) Sleep disturbance - although you may not experience severe insomnia or oversleeping you may notice subtle changes in your sleep patterns, leading to less restorative sleep. A student with high functioning depression may be experiencing a silent battle that goes unnoticed by many, including themselves. They may busy themselves with work to cope with anxiety about failing and if they come from a history of scarcity trauma they don’t feel they can take a break because they worry excessively about running low on resources❤️‍🩹. High achieving students may not realize that they are depressed but do experience angedonia and may rely heavily on substances in order to self medicate. When they do acknowledge depression they often internalize their pain, pushing themselves to meet academic expectations while dealing with the emotional weight of HFD because they don’t want to burden others with their problems😣 It’s a reminder that appearances can be deceiving, and it’s crucial to prioritize mental health even when juggling the demands of student life. These students are often leaders and the “rock” in the friend group so many are surprised when they finally share about their depression 📝 Disclaimer: You may want to consider your individual mental health needs with a licensed medical professional.
