When giving cues to athletes, always reflect on what is the intention behind the cue vs what is being executed. If there is a disparity between these, either break down the cue further and explain it or change the cue to something that the athlete understands. A poorly executed cue isn't helpful

This is not a message to be confused with “everything works.” The point is that when we’re looking at training variables and principles, they should be viewed as guardrails, not laws. One, because we do not have the science of everything 100 percent figured out. Two, because people are involved. Because of those two things, the best anyone can do is stay inside the guardrails, guardrails outlined by both science and real world application. A good coach should be able to articulate where their training principles and recommendations come from, and what those principles look like in practice, meaning what they have actually seen work with real people. From there, the trainee has a great place to start, and you will find that 99 percent of what good results producing coaches do is the same. When you start splitting hairs, one training variable one way or another, one exercise versus another, that is where it becomes the individual’s responsibility to try both, if you are between two options, and see what works better for you. Because of how science works, we will never have something that is always 100 percent better for one person than another. And because of how individuals apply things, there will always be factors that are not captured in a study that can lead to better results. So do not do anything extreme. There is a reason that if you are trying to get huge biceps, power snatches probably are not the best exercise. But at the same time, if some influencer is trying to convince you that a Smith machine incline press is exponentially better than a barbell incline press, I highly recommend you tap unfollow, and keep seeking out real practitioners to help you make training decisions. Good talk. See you out there.

Here I discuss the similarities and differences between training pro athletes in their offseason and “general fitness” clients, with overlay of my clients killing it in the gym. I did the best job I could to explain a nuanced topic in under three minutes, so I hope you find this helpful. Please save and share this, and if you have any questions, I’ll do my best to answer them. A few things of note: - I like to train everyone in an athletic-based way because I think there’s more to life (and fitness) than just looks; but for the purposes of this video, a “general fitness” client is an adult who has a job that’s not sports. As you’ll see though, there are way more similarities than differences in how I train each population. - Not all athletes train the same way—even if they play the same sport—and not all general fitness clients train the same way. We also take injury history, goals, and past training history into account with every client, so some of what I’m saying in this video is admittedly generalizations. - Logistics always dictate programming, so I’m only speaking for my situation. None of my clients come on a set schedule, so that’s a big reason why I do things the way I do. I don’t think most trainers realize what training pro athletes in the offseason really entails, too. - If you’re a non-athlete who enjoys things like Olympic lifting, weighted jumps, and stuff like that, by all means have at it. I’m speaking here as a trainer, but I’ll be the first to admit that I’m more conservative in my programming for my clients than I am for myself sometimes. There are a lot of things that I do personally just because I like it that I wouldn’t do with clients, so no judgment from me. Let me know what you think 👊

You’re not stuck. You’re just not doing the basics. You’re not training hard enough. You’re not tracking anything. And your “full reps” are half reps at best. If you don’t write it down, you can’t progressively overload. If you never get close to failure, you won’t force adaptation. If your range of motion is cut short, so are your results. Muscle doesn’t grow from vibes. It grows from tension, effort, and progression. If you’re tired of spinning your wheels, maybe it’s time to change how you train. Follow for real training education.

Some coaches are constantly advertising to try have as many clients as possible and I've seen some of these coaches programs and the majority look the same regardless of the lifter I've 25+ coaching clients (separate from rehab) and not a single one is doing the same program. I'm sure plenty of other coaches are the same Is it laziness or incompetence or both? It's definitely an injustice to the client. By giving them all the same stuff, you're assuming they can all tolerate that volume, frequency, intensity and have the exact same goals. Does that sound realistic?

You can “do it on your own.” No coach. No guidance. No structure. Just vibes and YouTube. And look… that might get you somewhere. But unless you truly know what you’re doing with a structured plan, clear metrics, adjustments, accountability, you’re not executing… you’re guessing. And guessing will get you progress. It just won’t get you precision. It won’t get you optimized. It won’t get you to your full potential. In fitness. In business. In life. The difference between decent results and elite results is structure. Every serious athlete has a coach. Every high-level CEO has mentors. Even the best need someone outside the frame to correct them. It’s not about being incapable. It’s about being strategic. You can go fast alone. But you go further and higher with guidance. If you’re tired of guessing and ready to execute with intention, you already know where to find me.
