This week we're working on animated cutaways to closeups of long, loose leaf texts called དཔེ་ཆ། (pecha) in Tibetan. These are wonderful, really cool bits of material culture and I wanted to take a moment to talk about their history -- and why they are so unique. To begin with, the shape of the pages is not arbitrary. The consensus among Tibetan and Western historians is that this reflects a much older tradition inherited from early Indian Buddhism – where texts were often written on long Talipot palm leaves, which can actually grow up to several meters in length. And, when Buddhism moved North into the Himalayas, this format traveled with it – even if the materials changed. By the 10th and 11th centuries, pecha had become the standard format for Tibetan literary production – replacing older manuscript forms like scrolls and codices, which we find in archaeological sites like Cave 17 in Dunhuang. Of course palm leaves don’t grow in Tibet’s climate, but the visual logic of the long folio endured. Over centuries Tibetan scribes adapted the format to locally made papers – which include the inner bark and plant fibers of shrubs like Himalayan Daphne… which creates a very durable, thick paper that’s not only well adapted to dry climates but also makes traditional pecha folios much easier to hold in one hand than you might expect. And these are still widely used today. You can find them online just easily as in open air markets across Tibet, Nepal, and the Himalayan world. But pecha are more than just books.
