THIn 2002, Madlib went to Brazil for two weeks, a trip he later said changed his life.
He came back with records most people wouldn’t know what to do with.
Here, he drops one on the turntable.
Then flips it into something new almost immediately.
By this point, Madlib had already trained his ear to hear past genre, language, and structure.
So when something interesting shows up, he doesn’t give himself time to hesitate
Instead he reacts.
This is also the same exact trip where he made the majority of the Madvillainy beats, an album that cemented both Madlib and MF DOOM in hiphop history.
Creative takeaway:
When you stop asking if something “should” work, you give yourself permission to find ideas faster.
That’s the difference between collecting inspiration, and actually using it.
