🍌 Makey Makey - beyond bananas! Yes, the banana piano is cool and never fails to ignite children’s excitement and curiosity - but it’s just the beginning! In the registration form for the Launchpad STEM Summer Camp, I asked the parents to share any hobbies or interests that could be used to personalise the lesson content. Music and instruments came up repeatedly in the responses and so I saw an opportunity! I used the banana piano as a provocation to explore circuits and conductivity. However, I invited the students to apply this in more creative ways and to take it much further! They used cardboard, craft materials and other resources to build their own musical instruments. We had guitars, keyboards, drum kits and more! They then used Scratch to find their instrument’s sounds and assign them to different keys. 🎵 Once students understand how @makeymakey works, there’s no creative limit - especially using a tool like Scratch to add elements of code. Scratch + Makey Makey is a winning combo for thinking skills and hands-on creativity! The students were obsessed with this project for the entire four hours that we were together, and so excited to share their working creations with their family members! To quote one of the mums, “The kids were HYPED!” Next time you implement Makey Makey, don’t stop with the banana piano and don’t even stop with musical instruments. Makey Makey can be applied across the curriculum in countless ways! This school year, consider ways that you might utilise Makey Makey and other great STEM resources for rich, creative learning that is also wildly engaging! #makeymakey #stemteacher #stemlearning #stemeducation #handsonlearning #stem #creativeclass

They were responsible for the tile art and assembling the wires. I taped all of them together in the end to create the “piano”.
