Hachure is a system of lines and dots drawn at different angles and sometimes in combinations to indicate different colours. There is a HUGE history to all the different systems, which originated in the late Middle Ages. I tend to use a mostly conventional system, except for black. In modern hatching black is vertical and horizontal lines, but I think it looks WAY better when they’re at a 45º angle. There’s a really good Wikipedia page on this. Just search ‘hatching heraldry’.
