At first glance this just looks like Matt tilling the greenhouse. But what he’s actually working on is soil tilth. Tilth is the structure of the soil. The balance of organic matter, air, moisture, and microbial life that allows plants to actually thrive. Without that structure, you can work the soil constantly and still struggle to grow healthy crops. Farm businesses work the same way. A lot of farms work incredibly hard and they raise good food. But the business structure underneath it is weak, which means income shows up irregularly instead of consistently. The Farmsteaders Playbook was written to help farmers build that foundation. Inside I walk through the exact membership model we use, how production planning works, and how farms can turn the food they already know how to raise into stable, reliable income. It’s under $500 and most farms can earn that back with their first members. If you want to see how the model works, the Playbook is linked in my bio.

Most farm plans start with crops. Carrots. Lettuce. Tomatoes. But profitable farms don’t start with vegetables. They start with a revenue target. When you know the income your household needs, the math gets surprisingly simple: Income goal → required sales → average order → weekly orders. Only after that do you figure out what to grow. This one shift completely changed how we planned our farm at Confluence Farms — and it’s why small farms can hit real revenue without needing acres of land. Most people are planning their crops. Very few are planning their numbers. Follow for more ideas on building profitable small farms 🌱 👇 Question for farmers: Did you start with crops… or with a revenue goal?

You can make $13k (profit) this summer. Right from your backyard. Part Time. Yes it will cost money to start a farm. It's a business and you do have to spend money to make money. But how many businesses 2x their investment within the first year? Not many. Veggie farming can do that, and if you stick with it, you can scale this to $100k/year OR MORE. My goal is $300k on about 1.5 acres within the next 5 years. I'm on my 6th season. We're at about $85k on 1/2 acre of space. My goal for this season is about $120k. Quick Tips To Succeed Condense your farm foot print. No Dig Deep Mulch. Plant In Grids. Cultivate Weekly. Plant food every week of your season. Keep 100% of your growing space planted at all times. Hug Your Customers. Say Thank You. Say Hello. Build a Relationship. Keep them coming back as close to 52 weeks a year as possible. These keys will make this business work without working 12-hour days and allow you to generate a seriously scalable income. I have a complete seed to sale course and mentoring program that can guide you through this in detail. If you want in, apply at the link in my bio! #Farming #Business #Land #Agriculture #Income

Most people think you need hundreds of acres to grow your own food. But with smart planning, less than one acre can produce a surprising amount — vegetables, fruit trees, herbs, eggs and even small livestock. Our goal with the Triple E Ranch micro farm is to show how much can be done with a small amount of land 🌱 YouTube tutorials linked in our bio!

Grow tents! We kick of the spring season by growing in tents. Here I’m bottom-watering sunflower shoots, alongside pea shoots and radish micros, which we sell as a blend. The trays are from @moderngrowerpro and Small Farm Works. We’re also now starting tomatoes and shallots in the tents. The LED lights generate just enough heat to keep the tents at cozy temperatures in the 70s. We ventilate them for at least an hour daily. The tents are the Walden model from @activegrowled . They cost less than a greenhouse. You can use CLAYBOTTOMFARMS for 10% off on their website, or see our website for more discount codes. This month the Lean Micro Farm Masterclass is also on sale, 40% off. #leanfarming #claybottomfarm #microfarming #marketgardening #growtents

So you want to be a farmer? Here’s what you have to do: 1. Get experience working on successful farms for multiple seasons (volunteering doesn’t count). Don’t skip this step! 2. Make yourself a financial roadmap. You start with the amount of money you want to pay yourself and work backwards from there. Be honest with the amount of money you need to earn in order to thrive, not just survive. Your business plan will be based on your roadmap. At this stage, only invest in the barest of essentials- what you think is going to work may not. You need to be able to pivot and adapt to what the market wants. 3. Test the market for a season. Make adjustments. Re-do your roadmap at the end of the season. Did your plan work? If not, how can you tweak it so that you can support yourself with your farm? Remember- farming is a business and you have to make a living doing it, otherwise you’ll be wasting years of your life doing something that will ultimately lead to failure. 4. Get good at what you do. Invest in the essentials but don’t get ahead of yourself. 5. Refine your systems. Once they’re good and what you’re doing is working, start investing in your farm business. 6. Keep going. Become the best at what you do. Never give up. Need some help? We got you. Soil structure matters. This clip looks like tilling, but it’s actually building tilth. Tilth is the foundation that allows plants to grow well. Farm businesses work the same way. A lot of farms are raising good food and selling products every week, but the system for consistent revenue was never built. That’s exactly what I walk through inside The Farmsteaders Playbook. The membership model. Production planning. And the structure that turns great food into stable farm income. If you want to see how the system works, the Playbook is linked in my bio.

I didn’t come from a farming background or go to school for horticulture. I just really wanted to do this, and found any way I could to get it done. It’s crazy to think about how it all started and how illegitimate it probably seemed to others what I was trying to do. But now it’s a growing entity and only getting better. I’m so glad I didn’t let fear ruin this for me. #farming #newengland #simplygrowingfood #garden #grownconnected #growing #permiculture #veggies #entrepreneur #firstgeneration

The FASTEST way to plant direct seeded crops. A PUSH SEEDER like The Jang or an Earthway is a total game changer on a small farm or homestead. It allows you to plant thousands of dollars of crops in minutes. I bet my $600 investment in the Jang back in 2019 has earned my farm over $100,000 in revenue since then. That is about the best possible ROI you can ask for. No other farm tool investment even comes close to that return. We still use it ALL THE TIME for Arugula, Radishes, Carrots, Turnips, Salad Mix. I also works great for Green Onions, Cilantro, Dill, Parsley and tons more crops. This is a must have investment for any small farm or homestead.
