In Australia, we have moths as big as bats with cute little faces that look like hedwig. This beauty flew into our dog run and couldn’t fly back out, likely due to the abdomen full of eggs making her too heavy to fly anymore. The giant wood moth is the worlds largest moth species. We relocated her to a comfortable maternity ward and let her lay her eggs peacefully. #giantwoodmoth #australiananimals #downunder #moth #largestmothintheworld

Let's go moth trapping 🤩 According to my moth book, there are 18 species of hawk-moths you could well find in the UK (cue my over excitement) 🤯 However, not all will be found on the south east coast where I live & 5 of those are not native species - the * DREAM * visitor for me would be a death's head 💀 The slow mo moth that looks like it's doing a bit of disco dancing has been a pretty regular visitor to the trap this summer, the elephant hawk-moth 🕺🏻 Elephant hawk-moth sounds like a funny name for a bright pink & green moth however its caterpillar form resembles that of an elephant's trunk 🐘 So far this summer other than elephant hawk-moths, I've also caught a poplar and a lime hawk-moth. Last year I caught a pine and privet hawk-moth, let's hope for more 🤞🏻 For more info on moth trapping including what moth trap I use & how I made my light, see links in bio 🌿 #Moth #Mothing #MothTrapping #Insects #Pollinators #MothsOfInstagram #MothsMatter #InsectsOfInstagram #ElephantHawkMoth #Mothstagram #UKMoths #UKInsects #Lepidoptera #Entomology #MothsAreBeautiful

Fake it till you make it🦋 The Hawk Moth caterpillar (𝘏𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘳𝘰𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘯𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘳𝘪𝘱𝘵𝘰𝘭𝘦𝘮𝘶𝘴) is a remarkable example of nature’s genius in defensive mimicry. Part of the Sphingidae family, known for its mimicry abilities, few species pull off this act as convincingly as this caterpillar. During its larval stage, it can inflate the front segments of its body, using air sacs, to resemble a snake’s head, complete with large, menacing false eye spots. These “eyes” are just an optical illusion created by markings on the underside of its body. To enhance the effect, the caterpillar contorts its body, arching backwards and positioning itself upside down on a branch, giving the appearance of a snake ready to strike. In the dense forests of Central and South America, this mimicry effectively deters predators such as birds, which are easily fooled by what looks like a dangerous snake. The Hawk Moth caterpillar’s lifecycle is brief, spending only a few weeks as a larva before transforming into a moth. This incredible footage is from Andreas Kay www.flickr.com/photos/andreaskay/sets/72157665346553825 go give him a follow! MOTH SCALES ✨ Moth scales are tiny, overlapping structures that cover the wings and bodies of moths. These scales give moths their characteristic colors and patterns. They are made of chitin, a protein that also forms the exoskeleton of insects. The arrangement, shape, and pigments within these scales determine the appearance of the moth’s wings, playing a crucial role in various aspects of their biology, including mate attraction, camouflage, and thermoregulation! #reels #reelsinstagram #moth #insect #bugs #snagnation #cygnustechdiffuser
