I normally use the slab roller to make all my handles for my mugs, but last night I was NOT feeling it. My slab roller was full of stuff that would’ve had to be cleaned off, so instead of acting like an adult and cleaning up my own mess, I turned to my trusty @kemper_tools handle maker. I have been using this tool for years, because if there’s one thing I hate making in the pottery process, it’s handles. Especially as a beginner potter, this tool saved so much time and wasted clay while trying to pull handles. It also creates such a uniform size and shape, so I can create more uniform mugs! This post is not sponsored, I simply wanted to share my experience with this tool. Yes, it can be a little messy, but even with the time it takes to smooth out the handles with water, it’s still quicker and more consistent than pulling handles (at least for me). Could I practice more and become quicker and better at pulling handles? Yes. Do I care to focus on that skill at this very moment? No thank you :) #beginnerpotter #potteryforbeginners #handlemaking #potterymug

A foot ring can either be elegant and add complexity and beauty to a pot or it can make it appear clunky. There’s nothing wrong with dog bowls 🐶, but I don’t want to eat out of one. Did you know adding a handle actually takes longer than throwing the whole mug? (at least for me it does🥲) A few things I do every time to keep my connections from cracking: Trim and handle your vessel when it is as wet as possible. Once it starts drying out just a little it will become much more prone to cracking. Use vinegar in your slip. The acid in vinegar creates a stronger bond by causing clay particles to be attracted to eachother. It also creates a slower more even drying process. Use coils (not slip) to fill in the gaps and compress the joint million times Keep mugs covered for at least 24 hrs after you handle them to give them a chance to equalize and dry more evenly. Hope these help! Drop any tips you swear by in the comments or let me know if you have any question✨💗 #mugs #handle #potterytips #themugclub

Turning a mug on the wheel in real-time. 😌 This is the step before pulling the handle and adding final surface decoration. Turning removes any excess clay and tidies up the bottom making it smooth and level to put down on surfaces. You may notice me tapping the bottom throughout, this is so I can hear and feel how much material is left. There isn’t much clay to remove on these mugs, so it’s a fairly quick process - and fun to watch!
