I’ll take the most simple and stress-free version of life please! I actually did a test recently and found out that my ancestors were likely nomadic people who moved around with their cattle, and I feel that to my core. But seriously, it makes me sad that we live in a world where we have to spend more time working than with family and doing our hobbies. I spent a day with a nomadic Changpa family in the Indian Himalayas 🇮🇳🏔️🐏 📍 The Changpa are pastoral nomads who live in the Changthang Plateau of eastern Ladakh, a vast high-altitude cold desert near the Tibetan Plateau. Sitting above 4,500 meters, this is one of the harshest inhabited regions on Earth, with brutal winters and extreme isolation. ⛺️ The Changpa don’t live in permanent villages. Their homes move with the seasons. They migrate across the open plains of Changthang with their herds, setting up temporary tents wherever grazing land and water are available. 🐐 Life here revolves around animals. Pashmina goats, sheep, and yaks provide food, income, and warmth. Every day starts early, animals always come first, and everything they own must be light enough to move. 🔥 Inside their tent, the fire never goes out. Meals are simple, days are long, and life follows the rhythm of weather, light and land rather than time. 📆 Spending time with them was a reminder of how different “home” can look and how little is actually needed when everything has a purpose. The Raute are a small, officially recognized nomadic ethnic group of Nepal, often described as one of the country’s last traditional hunter-gatherer communities, living mainly in the forested middle hills of western districts such as Surkhet, Dailekh, Salyan, Dang, and Achham and speaking a Sino-Tibetan language known as Raute or Khamji. Traditionally, they survived by hunting langur and macaque monkeys, gathering wild tubers, fruits, and greens, and carving wooden bowls, boxes, and utensils that were bartered with nearby villagers for rice, cloth, and iron, while strongly rejecting agriculture, permanent settlement, and formal education, and living in temporary camps that moved seasonally or after events like death. In recent decades, however, their way of life has come under serious pressure due to forest restrictions, deforestation, and government policies, leading many Raute to settle permanently and depend on social security allowances and external support. As a result, health and welfare challenges such as food insecurity, limited access to healthcare, and rising alcohol use have emerged, and with their population remaining very small and only a few still fully nomadic, balancing cultural preservation with modern integration continues to be a major challenge for the Raute community.
