Listen… if you’re dodging hugs at family gatherings, that doesn’t make you rude. It makes you someone dealing with contamination OCD in the middle of flu season - and honestly? That tracks. Because when OCD gets loud, even something as harmless as a hug can feel like a full-blown threat. Your brain starts running the “what if” script… What if they’re sick? What if I get sick? What if I spread it? What if something terrible happens? And then you’re scanning exit routes like a super spy. But here’s what I need you to hear⤵️ You don’t have to live this way forever. Avoidance feels protective in the moment, but long-term? It just teaches your brain that hugging = danger… and it tightens the grip. I’ve watched people go from “absolutely not, do NOT touch me” to “okay… fine… bring it in” ...to actually being present in those moments again - without the panic, without the contamination spiral, without the mental gymnastics. If you’re reading this and thinking, “Ugh, that’s literally me,” I’ve got you. Comment STRATEGIES and I’ll send you some actually-helpful, therapist-approved ways to get through moments like this - without making OCD louder in the process. . . . . #anxiety #ocd #intrusivethoughts #ocdproblems #ocdhelp #ocdrecovery

And that’s on healing 🫶🏼🥹 Thoughts are not good or bad. They merely are thoughts aka words in the mind. . Thoughts are not actions. Having a thought about hurting someone is NOT hurting someone. . I understand feeling bad, disgusting, and like a monster for having intrusive thoughts (especially the taboo ones). *And* I know that mindfulness and the art of acceptance/non-judgment helps immensely with the shame. . And guess what? Taylor Swift knows it too 😉 . 📌3 truths about the OCD/anxiety recovery process: 1. The point of OCD recovery isn’t to make intrusive thoughts go away. The point is to change your relationship with them. 2. The point of recovery isn’t to make fear or uncertainty go away; it’s to learn that you are BEYOND capable of tolerating emotions. 3. The point of recovery is not to convince ourselves that nothing bad will ever happen. The point is to learn that you can handle it if it does. Sooo….If your recovery goal is to do some deep breathing and make your anxiety/intrusive thoughts go away, then you’ve got the wrong goal. The first thing you need to understand is that anxiety isn’t going anywhere. It’s a HUMAN experience. The problem is that when you assign meaning and significance that NORMAL experience, you teach your brain and nervous system that it’s ABNORMAL and dangerous. In other words, when you try to make a normal experience go away, you’re assigning meaning to it. At that point, you’re pressing “more cortisol please!” Button. Anything you do with the motivation of making anxiety or intrusive thoughts stop or go away (compulsions, safety behaviors, avoidance, immediate coping skills etc) makes things way worse in the long run. It opens the door for OCD/anxiety to rule your life. How do we not let anxiety and intrusive thoughts rule our lives? We need to… 💫Accept the presence of discomfort (anxiety, disgust, uncertainty etc). Same goes for your intrusive thoughts, and no, this does not mean you’re endorsing or liking them. You’re just being willing to coexist. 💫Approach your triggers (do this gradually!) so that you can give your brain opportunities to learn how strong you really are. The moment you drop OCD/anxiety’s catastrophic narrative and decide to accept risk and discomfort, you deprive it of what it needs to SURVIVE. In that moment, you are choosing to trust the person who actually deserves your respect: YOU. And sure enough, that is where victory comes in💪🏻 • #OCD #ocdrecovery #ObsessiveCompulsiveDisorder #ocdwarrior #ocdhelp

I wanted to come on here and say thank you for the amazing response I’ve gotten from the podcast I did with @treatmyocd sharing my story! I’ve received a ton of messages from people asking how they can explain to loved ones what they are experiencing, what ocd is, etc. This passage that my therapist showed me when I was in the thick of it made it much easier for me to explain. I remember when I was in my intensive outpatient program and telling all my friends I was being treated for ocd. Due to the lack of awareness I’m sure that left them with a ton of questions…so sending this to them made me feel so much better. I hope this can help some people who are struggling to explain what they’re dealing with! I love you guys and the amazing OCD community. Have you had intrusive thoughts that you’re scared to tell anyone? Patients who’ve had these kinds of thoughts tell me: “Because I’m having these thoughts, it means I could lose control, and do it.” “The thoughts keep happening it means I might do it” Intrusive thoughts like this one are not consistent with the persons beliefs and values. They are often a sign that the person is caring, kind, and gentle. The person is so disturbed at the thought, they try to do things to prevent it from coming true. Thoughts alone cannot make you do anything. #intrusivethoughts #intrusive #intrusivethoughtsawareness #ocd #ocdlife #ocdhelp #ocdrelief #ocdrecovery #ocdproblems #ocdtips #ocdadvocate #ocdawareness #ocdsupport #ocdtherapy #ocdclean #livingwithocd #erp #exposureresponseprevention #erptherapy #exposuretherapy #intrusivethoughts #pureocd #pocd #harmocd #religiousocd #healthanxiety #anxietyattack #anxietyproblems #anxietyawareness #anxietytips #anxietydisorders

I was so shaken the first time OCD showed up in my dreams. I thought the dreams must MEAN something and felt betrayed by my own brain. I was also desperate for relief and angry because I’d though going to sleep was a sure fire way to finally make my brain shut up and stop the intrusive thoughts, but here’s the thing: Our brains don’t stop working while we’re asleep. They’re actually busy processing everything we’ve done and learned during the day, encoding memories, and keeping us alive. Pretty amazing! So, it makes sense that if we’re ruminating before bed or a large portion of our mental energy is given over to obsessions and compulsions, OCD may show up in our dreams too. Yup, dreams are really just fragments of our days and lives that don’t hold any meaning aside from the meaning we give them. Yes, even OCD dreams. So, if OCD shows up in your dreams please know it’s okay to treat those dreams the same way you would intrusive thoughts- as irrelevant- and move on with your night/day. Remember, no matter what form OCD takes, it’s still the same old OCD. #ocd #ocdawareness #ocdlife #anxietyawareness #ocdhelp #anxietysupport #anxious #mentalhealth #mentalhealthsupport

The key to sensory motor OCD recovery—and any form of OCD—is sitting with discomfort without performing compulsions. Avoidance may seem like relief, but it keeps the cycle alive. Instead, welcome the feelings fully. Let them be there without judgment or attempts to change them. Over time, as you practice this, the discomfort will pass, and you’ll gain freedom.
