Singapore's tropical rainforests, primarily located in the Bukit Timah and Central Catchment Nature Reserves, represent remnant, high-biodiversity ecosystems with over 300 plant species, including endangered dipterocarps. These protected areas are vital for conservation, featuring multi-layered, mature forests that homes many unique species of Invertebrates and Vertebrates. 📷: Olympus E-M1 Mark II 🔎: M.Zuiko 60mm f2.8, Raynox DCR-250, M.zuiko 12-40mm f2.8, Laowa 15mm Macro 💥: Godox V860lll, V350 💻: Lightroom, Helicon focus, Topaz Denoise #macro #wildlife #nature #photography #naturephotography

Field Notes: January 14, 2026 Location: Riparian Canopy Trail, Danum Valley Conservation Area, Sabah, Borneo ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Encounter Summary: ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Priya found it by accident. She had snapped a low branch to check for epiphyte growth and there it was, frozen mid-stride on the bark - Bryocampa succulenta, known to the Iban trackers along this river as "Moss Jewel." It was barely thumb-length, its body layered in overlapping petal-shaped plates of dusty mauve and rose, with tufts of living moss anchored in the joints between them. Six wiry legs the color of wet cinnamon gripped the bark, and at the posterior a starburst rosette unfurled like a tiny succulent, pale gold at the center bleeding to pink at each pointed tip. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Priya held the branch steady and leaned in. The creature did not flee but instead flattened itself against the bark, plates compressing until it became nothing more than a scab of lichen beside a small fungal bloom. The camouflage was so complete that when she blinked she had to search for it again. Only when she held perfectly still for thirty seconds did the plates slowly re-expand, the starburst rosette opening petal by petal as if testing the air. I believe the rosette functions as a chemical lure - its surface glistened with a faint nectar film that would attract the micro-flies this species likely feeds on, turning the bloom into both disguise and trap. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Iban elder Empiang Ding told us that finding a Moss Jewel on a freshly broken branch is a sign the forest has accepted your passage; hunters press a thumb to the bark beside it and continue quietly, never taking the branch home. Watching Priya hold that twig with the care of someone cradling a lit candle, I thought: this is what fieldwork is for - the moments too small and too perfect to have been planned. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ More at @oleg.pars ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Made with @krea_ai & @soraofficial ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ . ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ #cryptid #aiart #digitalart #conceptart #natgeo #legend #fiction #flowers #insect #olegpars #storytelling #pokemon

Video by @javier_aznar_photography | This moss‑mimicking stick insect (Trychopeplus sp.) was filmed in Ecuador’s endangered Chocó rainforest, within a reserve protected by Fundación Jocotoco. This forest is a refuge for thousands of species, many still poorly studied and some even new to science. Protecting these areas is essential to ensure that such extraordinary creatures continue to thrive. The post showcases Extatosoma tiaratum, a phasmid insect native to northern Queensland, Australia, where wingless females up to 20 cm long mimic thorny eucalyptus leaves for camouflage against predators like birds. The embedded video, credited to kaynelawton, captures the insect's spiny, jagged body swaying gently on a handler's gloved hand, illustrating its adaptive movement that mimics wind-blown foliage in rainforest environments. Research in Behavioral Ecology (2015) highlights the species' parthenogenetic reproduction, enabling all-female lineages to thrive without males, boosting survival in isolated habitats despite occasional aggressive rejection of mates.

Spotteld in the cool misty forests of Sri Lanka’s central highlands — a delicate spider resting quietly on a vibrant purple flower. I’m sharing this reel for identification help from the amazing arachnid community 🙏 🌿 Habitat: Cool, moist montane forest 🌸 Location: On a purple wildflower 🕷️ Behavior: Calmly waiting, possibly ambush-style In highland ecosystems, flower-visiting spiders are often: • Ambush hunters waiting for pollinators • Masters of camouflage • Important natural pest controllers • Indicators of a healthy forest micro-habitat Could this belong to a flower crab spider group (family Thomisidae)? Or perhaps a lynx spider (family Oxyopidae)? Or something entirely different found in Sri Lankan montane forests? Experts, your insights are most welcome! 🙏 #SpiderIdentification #SriLankaWildlife #HighlandForest #Arachnology #FlowerSpider #NatureReel #CentralHighlands 🌿🕷️

During my long hours of walking through the jungle, I came across all kinds of creatures. It was incredibly hard not to stop every two meters to photograph them !! But I made an exception for this tiny jumping spider 🕷️The species is currently unknown, and it may not even have been described yet (!!) To me, it looks somewhat like a Phintella, but that’s just a guess.. The moment I pointed my camera at him, he immediately seemed to take an interest in me, as you can probably tell from those big, curious eyes 👀 And that’s when you start to wonder… who is observing whom in this story? 😅 He has probably never seen a human in his life aha #entomology #conservation #jungle #sulawesi
