SThonestly i was never a high performing med student these past 5 years. Was constantly lost, confused and very anxious 😥 in all my lectures, tutorials and on the wards.
What changed was i stumbled into a niche perfect for my existing skill set. Being good at something made me passionate about it and even better at it. And for the first time, I felt competent as a future doctor.
So i guess the moral story is you don’t have to find your passion, it will just show up one day as the thing you are good at. I then realised perhaps i wasn’t a shoddy student all this time, perhaps i just lacked the excitement for it? but anyways thank goodness it’s here now.
This honestly was a very lucky thing, and if it can happen to me - you all should know ANYTHING in this world is possible. Life is too short for you to sabotage your story with self-doubt 🫶🏻

✨MD-PhD program ✨ is an accelerated PhD program for medical students who want to become physician/scientists. It allows me to complete the PhD portion in 2 years. As i have done 4/5 years of medical school (MD)+ 1 year of Honours - I will have 3 years left to go (2 years of PhD and final year of med school)!

PHIts nearly phd interview season (eeeek!!) and because of the way my application worked, I actually interviewed twice at Oxford so I’d say I’m pretty well versed in this area (this is part 1 of 3). I was rejected from my initial DTP application (boooo) but then my supervisor reached out directly and asked if I was still interested (obvs said yes), and then I recieved my offer that same day☺️
- why are you interested in this phd?
- what has been the hardest research you’ve carried out to date?
- summarise your proposed project in 1 minute?
- what do you think are the main pitfalls in this field?
- tell me about recent developments in this field?
- how would you share your findings with the public?
- what experience/skills do you have that you feel is relevant?
- why is this project worth funding more than others?
- what is the main hypothesis that you want to test?
- what interests you about this university?
- how will you ensure the project is completed on time?
- would you spend time looking for additional funding?
All of these questions were either asked directly to me or my peers who were interviewed before me - before my interview (which lasted about 25 mins, with 10 mins of that being a presentation by me on my previous work) - I drafted & practiced answers for every single one the day before so I wasn’t caught out. Don’t forget you can say I don’t know, and ask for clarifying questions!!

It’s PhD interview season! I did my first PhD interview in Jan 2020😮 I did a post a few years ago about my PhD interview questions but I’ve thrown a few more in here that other PhDs I’ve spoken to were asked! I didn’t apply to any competitive funding / external funding for my PhDs, but if you do then you will likely get asked questions about how you will find funding etc too!
When answering questions, my advice would be to try and think about why they’re asking that? What skill or experience can you demonstrate in your answer?
The obvious ones:
Why do you want to do a PhD?
Why do you want to do a PhD at this institute/ university/lab?
Why are you interested in this project?
Tell me about a paper/ area of the field that interests you.
Questions that test what kind of person you are:
How do you communicate with supervisors?
What are your career ambitions?
What is your biggest weakness
What area of science do you think is most important for society at the moment ?
What difficulties do you expect to encounter during your PhD and how will you approach these challenges ?
What do you look for in a supervisor / lab?
Skills based questions:
Describe a time when you had to troubleshoot / problem solve
What techniques / skills are you strongest at and which skills may you need more help with?
How do you organise your time ?
What do you think the field will look like in 5 years time?
How would you communicate your work to the public/ your peers ?

CHA well overdue PhD recap ❤️🩹
Inspired by @jefftao_ 🤩 the reason I made this account was to make being in science less scary. And for a while I thought talking about the negatives that happened to me in academia would be the antithesis of that. But watching Jeff share his journey reminded me sometimes the thing we need is to just see - yes it’s tough - but we can also make it through ❤️🩹🤗🫶
When I was going through the worst of it, I didn’t know how I would ever get back to enjoying science again. I didn’t see a way out except leaving science altogether. And for sure there’s still days where this hits hard, I feel like an imposter because I left academia. I sometimes feel like a fraud for still wanting to learn and share and enjoy science when I’m not attached to some prestigious institution.
But I refuse to let a supervisor or toxic workplace strip my joy for science because they want me to take away my shine. I believe that academia can change. And we have to advocate for ourselves to make that change happen. 🫶

EVPhD admissions in the U.S. - explained simply 👇
If you’re applying (especially as an international student), save this.
There are two main ways PhD admissions work in the U.S.:

1️⃣ Direct PhD Admission (Professor-specific)
This is when you:
• Identify your research interest
• Make a list of professors working in that area
• Email them directly with your CV + research background
If a professor:
• Is actively looking for a student
• Likes your experience or publications
• Has funding
They may interview you and admit you directly into their lab.
⚠️ Reality check:
• Response rates are low (that’s normal)
• It’s harder when applying directly from outside the U.S.
• It’s easier if you already have strong research experience, publications, or referrals
Still possible, just more effort + patience.

2️⃣ Umbrella / Program-based PhD Admission
This is the most common route at large U.S. universities.
Here:
• You apply to a broad PhD program (life sciences, biomedical sciences, etc.)
• Multiple departments fall under one program
• The university admits a cohort of PhD students every year
You:
• Do rotations
• Explore labs
• Choose your advisor after joining
✅ Pros:
• Higher chances than direct admission
• More flexibility if you’re still exploring research areas
⚠️ Important note for international students:
Funding limits mean these programs are more competitive, and selection depends on multiple factors like experience, publications, and fit.

• Research experience matters more than grades
• Publications help, but are not mandatory
• Being already in the U.S. can increase chances
• Prestigious institutions are more recognizable, but strong profiles can still stand out
• GRE is no longer required at most U.S. universities (huge relief!)
• TOEFL/English proficiency is still required
