📌 The process of getting your dog to prance often starts with a food lure, where the food serves as a motivator to guide the dog into the desired position or movement.
✋ You begin by holding the food in a way that encourages your dog to move into the right posture or action. For a prance, you might guide the dog by moving the food in a way that makes them lift their legs higher, mimicking the prance. The lure is just the initial step to get the behavior going, but the key here is timing. As soon as the dog takes the correct step or exhibits the prancing behavior—whether it’s lifting a paw or bouncing—you immediately mark and reward them with the food. The reward marker needs to come right at the moment the prancing happens, not before or after, so your dog understands exactly what earned the reward.
🔁 Repetition is where the behavior gets ingrained. By consistently repeating the action and rewarding the correct steps, your dog learns what you expect from them. The more reps they do with the food lure, the clearer the association becomes: “I move this way (prance), I get rewarded.” As the dog starts to get the hang of it, you can gradually reduce how much you need to guide them with the food lure.
⏱️ Good timing is one of the most important aspects of dog training. If you reward too early, before they’ve actually completed the desired prance, they may not understand what part of their action you’re reinforcing. If you reward too late, they might be confused about what exactly they did that earned the reward. Ideally, you want the reward marker to come immediately after the correct behavior is performed, so the connection is crystal clear for your dog.
❌ It’s important to note that low-effort repetitions, where the dog is half-hearted or not fully engaged, should not be rewarded. If you reward a lazy or incomplete prance, your dog may start offering less effort, thinking that’s enough to get the reward. By only rewarding the higher-quality, full-effort prances, you set a higher standard and ensure the behavior becomes more precise and energetic over time.
