Pulsatile tinnitus is a rhythmic buzzing or whooshing sound that matches your heartbeat. It often happens when blood flow near the ear becomes turbulent or louder than normal. Possible causes include: 💓 High blood pressure 🩺 Anemia 🧠 Increased intracranial pressure 👂 Middle ear fluid or nearby blood vessel changes While most cases are not dangerous, a new or one-sided pulsating sound should be checked by a doctor to rule out vascular or pressure-related issues. Have you ever noticed a pulsing sound like this in your ear? Pulsatile Tinnitus post! Second non-art post in a row?! Forgive me!. Anyway, I’ve spoken a bit about my Pulsatile Tinnutus, and I’m sharing this video in case others have the same issue! While drawing for my book, I started stretching in my chair, and I stumbled upon these stretches that have reduced my pulsatile tinnitus (so far! It’s only been like 20 min but I’m excited)! I hear it intermittently, but right now I do not, which is a huge improvement! Gonna stretch like this everyday from now on, let’s see if there’s long term results! #Pulsatiletinnitus #tinnitus #stretching #chairstretches

Pulsatile tinnitus is a rhythmic whooshing or thumping sound in the ear, synchronized with your heartbeat, caused by turbulent blood flow or other vascular issues near the ear, unlike typical ringing tinnitus. Common culprits include high blood pressure, irregular blood vessels, anemia, thyroid problems, or even head/neck tumors, making prompt medical evaluation crucial as it signals underlying conditions that can range from benign to serious. Diagnosis involves physical exams, hearing tests, and imaging (CT/MRI) to find the root cause, which dictates treatment, from managing blood pressure to addressing specific structural problems.   What it sounds like A rhythmic whooshing, pulsing, or thumping. Often described as hearing your heartbeat in your ear. More noticeable in quiet environments.  Common causes Vascular Issues: Turbulent blood flow in arteries or veins near the ear (atherosclerosis, carotid stenosis, arteriovenous malformations). High Blood Pressure (Hypertension): Makes blood flow more forceful. Blood Vessel Abnormalities: Malformations or narrowed vessels. Anemia: Low red blood cell count increases blood flow speed. Thyroid Problems: An overactive thyroid (hyperthyroidism) speeds up blood flow. Increased Pressure in the Head: Benign intracranial hypertension (IIH). Tumors: Rare tumors near the ear or skull base. Eustachian Tube Dysfunction: An abnormally open Eustachian tube.  When to see a doctor If you experience pulsatile tinnitus, especially in just one ear, it's important to see a doctor (ENT or neurotologist) for a thorough evaluation. This is because it can be a sign of a serious underlying medical issue affecting blood flow.  Diagnosis & Treatment Diagnosis: Involves physical exam, hearing tests, and imaging like CT or MRI scans.  Treatment: Focuses on the underlying cause, such as managing blood pressure, treating anemia, or addressing specific vascular or structural problems.  LIKE SHARE AND FOLLOW TO SUPPORT. #pulsatiletinnitus #pulse #hear #tinnitus #pattern

🦅Eagle syndrome results from compression of vascular and neural structures by an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament. 🦴The styloid process is a small, pointed bone that extends from the temporal bone at the base of the skull. The stylohyoid ligament is a connective tissue structure that runs from the styloid process to the hyoid bone in your neck. When either of these structures becomes elongated or calcifies, it can compress nearby vascular and neural structures. The most common presentation is Eagle Jugular Syndrome, where the styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament compresses the internal jugular vein against the C1 vertebra, creating increased venous pressure and turbulent blood flow. This vascular compression can manifest as pulsatile tinnitus (hearing your pulse in your ear) and intense head/eye pressure. Additional symptoms include throat pain, dysphagia, neck pain, jaw pain, and increased head pressure, particularly with head turning. It’s actually torture!!! 🥲 If you also have craniocervical instability (CCI), C1 instability compounds the jugular vein compression. This results in increased venous congestion and symptom severity. Diagnosis requires a clinical evaluation combined with imaging. A detailed history of your symptoms is necessary, and evidence of an elongated styloid process or calcified stylohyoid ligament. A 3D CT scan is the gold standard imaging. Have you been evaluated for this? #eaglesyndrome #hypermobileehlersdanlossyndrome #posturalorthostatictachycardiasyndrome #headaches

If you hear a whoosh, give it a push… if it goes away, —call Dr. Dorothea today.” That rhythmic pulsing in your ear could be more than just a nuisance. It’s called pulsatile tinnitus, and in some cases, it’s linked to brain pressure, blood flow, or vascular narrowing. #pulsatiletinnitus

POV: You Hear This at Night Sources- PMID 40693879 Pulsatile tinnitus is often distinguished from the more common “ringing” tinnitus because it is a mechanical sound: a rhythmic thumping or whooshing that perfectly syncs with the patient’s heartbeat. While standard tinnitus is often idiopathic or related to hearing loss, pulsatile tinnitus is frequently a “bruit,” or the actual sound of blood flowing through nearby vessels that the ear is picking up. Because of this mechanical nature, medical literature suggests that an identifiable, often treatable, physical cause can be found in the vast majority of cases, up to 70%, if a thorough diagnostic “work-up” involving specialized imaging is performed. The causes are generally categorized into vascular, structural, or systemic issues. Vascular causes might include idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH), where increased pressure in the fluid around the brain compresses the veins, or narrowing of the blood vessels (stenosis). Structural causes can include a “dehiscent” or thinning bone between the ear and the large vessels of the neck, which essentially removes the soundproofing that normally keeps our internal plumbing quiet. Because these causes are physical, they often respond well to targeted interventions like stenting, surgery, or medication to lower internal pressure. This high rate of “curability” makes it essential for patients to seek a dedicated neuro-otologic evaluation rather than simply being told to “live with it.” #tinnitus #hearing #health
