Have you heard of the AAC Genie? 🧞 It is an informal qualitative diagnostic tool designed to inform AAC assessment and device trials. The main use of this, too, is to guide clinical reasoning about which type of AAC systems we want to introduce for further assessment. The AAC Evaluation Genie should support informed AAC trials when integrated with functional, culturally responsive, and evidence-based AAC assessment practices. This tool, along with any other diagnostic tool, should not be used in isolation when making AAC recommendations. Most people (parents, speech therapists, ABA providers, teachers) when first starting to use an AAC device think that fewer buttons on a page means that it will be easier for a child to use, therefore it’s better, right? However, bigger buttons, and less buttons on a screen does not make things easier. In fact, it can make it even more difficult to use a device because the user may have to navigate many more times to actually get to what they would like to say. I used to edit my devices to look like this, not knowing it was making things harder. Now I know that there is a clear way to model language without sacrificing a big vocabulary. Want to know more? High-tech AAC can be incredibly powerful communication tool, but only when parents and adults around the child understand how to model language and use it in every day interaction.
