A lot of people’s go to move to get their dogs attention off of a trigger is to stand in front and block the dogs view. This is actually builds your dog’s frustration and pushes them to react more! Instead, if you wanted to get your dog’s attention off or the trigger, try calling them or get them moving and into a following role. I don’t always start a socialization session by sitting down and watching other dogs. This approach does work but it works best when the dog has an understanding of markers and has a level of patience and emotional control that it probably doesn’t already have. . 2) Doggie Daycares to resocialise them . This approach typically won’t work. Moving on. . Things I WOULD do . 1) Play. . Remember how I said a dog needs to develop patience and emotional control before we do counter -conditioning? I teach that through structured play first. . 2) Hand-feeding . Remember how I said a dog needs an understanding of markers before we do counter-conditioning? What has your dog taught you? Despite the enormous amounts of stress, heartache, and anxiety that come along with owning a reactive dog, there is so much beauty in this unique experience. Winnie has taught me far more invaluable lessons than just these five things, and I could not be more grateful to be on this journey of overcoming reactivity with her. It’s made me a more considerate person, a more knowledgeable owner and a better handler. It’s crazy to think that I was going through such enormous lows so often 2 years ago. I felt so defeated, overwhelmed and utterly hopeless. I would collapse into my bed and sob into my pillow at the end of a bad reactivity day. It’s been a long, long time since I’ve had a day like that and those nasty lingering emotions, so I guess what I want to say is this. To those that are going through some real low in your training with your dog, know that it’s temporary. Every day, you get a little closer to finding the right training and management strategy that allows you and your dog to live a happy, stress-free life together. You will get through this 🤍 #reactivedogtraining #reactivityawareness #reactivedog #dogreactivity #dogtraining
