Did you know that April is Autism Acceptance Month? Autism, also discussed as Autism Spectrum Disorder or Autism Spectrum Condition, can impact how individuals feel, think, perceive, communicate, engage, and learn. “Autistic” is not an insult - it just describes a specific way some brains work. Autistic people are not “superhuman geniuses,” “emotionless robots,” or “burdens.”
Many Autistic people are also impacted by other systems of oppression. Autistic women and girls are often underrepresented in research and underdiagnosed, and Black and Brown autistic people are often subjected to additional violence due to systemic racism and ableism.
Remember to that Autistic self advocacy exists and is so important. Listen to Autistic voices (and also non-speech communication) instead of organizations and so-called allies that speak over Autistic people.

And I'd like to also add: Unmasking is complicated and challenging, especially for us late diagnosed Autistics. I personally have had a hard time finding my authentic unmasked autistic self. As well as LETTING myself be unmasked. All that internalized ableism towards myself. I honestly don't know if I ever will know my unmasked self! It is a very complicated and vulnerable process and state of being. And to fully unmask is a privilege a lot of Autistics unfortunately can't afford in their lives, and some are not safe to do so. Especially marginalized Autistics. I hope that if you fall into this category that you are taking care of yourselves as best you can in your current environments! And that you have some time and a safe space to let that mask fall. 💚

Just because one child’s struggles are more visible than another’s it doesn’t always mean they are worse off or struggling more. Their needs are simply very different. I believe this consistent comparison isn’t fault of the parents themselves as it’s a very difficult world to try and navigate as parents not only in emotional terms but also in terms of our general understanding of autism itself.
I believe this is mainly a
Result of the lack of specificity in diagnosis partly to do with the wider world, professional and otherwise, still having a large amount to learn about what autism actually is and how best to help every individual and every parent meet their respective needs effectively.
Less comparison, more understanding, more support. It’s a common goal. ✌️❤️

LAToday is the last day of Autism Acceptance Month and Deaf History Month – but support for deaf and autistic people should not end today. Our final feature of the month, Quinn, shares ways to support Deaf and autistic people year-round.

This makes it a struggle for Deaf people to do everyday things. Things like ordering prescriptions, talking to your insurance, fixing your car, just ordering food! So many important things! Support and encourage research on deafness and autism. 70% of d/Deaf children experience language deprivation. This can look like autism. This means diagnosis is very hard and complicated. Doctors still have to use diagnostic standards for hearing people. Research on d/Deaf experiences combined with other disabilities is rare to find and hard to fund.
