SHHere are 3 steps I take in approaching my rendering…
1. Linework
Have you noticed how therapeutic colouring books can be? I also aim to make my renderings as smooth as possible by focusing on edge control first, (basically means to make the edges clean). This gives objects a more defined shape so you're not always guessing where things are. I enjoy linework and I keep my lineworks, so I usually spend extra time on it. This process also helps indicate where objects overlap, which is useful for creating depth and dynamics
2. Block-in
It's now time to colour in your own colouring book. I use a desaturated base colour (refers to the colour of an object without any influence of light) to give each separate item its own block. This acts as a guide in the economy of elements. It will also be useful later for selective adjustments. Make sure to watch out if you need to adjust your composition before moving into the refining stage.
3. Gradients
Think of this step as bringing back life to the things. I’d start off with a soft brush just bumping up the “saturation” of your base colour by 10-20% and slowly build up the thing (I’d go in where I think curves/change of planes are). Gradients are an easy way to quickly establish form and it’ll help you see how you’d want to design the shadows too. Think about how the light source changes the colours of the things. For example, is the cloth semi transparent where the colour of the light will mix with the fabric so therefore making it warmer? (atmosphere also places a big role but that can easily be adjusted later on with the hue slide)
After doing all these, you’re able to focus just on the shadows by using a multiply layer or whichever layer style that suits.
I understand there are many ways in rendering but I find following these steps help keep my busy brain on track.
