Can a $27 sander from Amazon actually hold its own against my $99 DeWalt? 👀
You all asked for a real side-by-side, so here’s what I did:
I taped off a dresser top, grabbed both sanders, and made sure they got the same wood, same sandpaper, and same speed. No tricks, no brand deals. Just a real, split test with tools purchased with my own dollars.
Honestly? I went in expecting the DeWalt to absolutely crush the dupe. But after I ran my hand across both sides, I couldn’t tell the difference. Not even a little.
What surprised me:
• The $27 sander took off the old finish just as fast.
• The final surface was just as smooth as the DeWalt’s. No weird marks, no extra work needed.
• Even the noise and vibration were basically the same.
Where the DeWalt still wins:
• Dust collection: the DeWalt does a slightly better job. The Amazon dupe makes a bit more dust, because the canister is a little looser.
• The DeWalt is slightly lighter and feels more balanced after a long session. The dupe is a tad heavier.
• Name brand, warranty, resale: if you care about these things, it still matters to get the brand name.
So would I recommend the Amazon sander?
If you’re on a budget, 100% yes. If you’re a beginner, or just getting started with furniture flips, you can absolutely get pro results without spending $99. If you sand every day or want to stick to a brand, the DeWalt is still the champ. But for most DIYers, I can’t justify the extra $70.

WEWhat the sandpaper in the drum sander looks like after stripping a mineral oil & beeswax finish off some wood. Would make sense to toss the paper at this point but I was curious how well the eraser would clean it up. Turns out it cleans up nicely, that paper's got some life left yet!

You can find a ton of different brands selling basically the same thing. Definitely worth getting if you sand drywall every now and then. Obviously you guys do this every day are going to have a much better tool.
