1. Confidence is not the absence of fear or doubt. It’s acting despite it. Embracing that it will come. This builds evidence for your mind and body that you can do it even when uncomfortable. 2. Not being yourself destroys confidence quickly. Owning who you are- all parts of you and respecting yourself is crucial to being confident. 3. Confidence comes from the word with trust. Confident people have this attitude of ‘I will figure it out’. That’s key. Life will always have ups and downs but you have to trust yourself that you will find a way. Links to number 1 4. You can build confidence by non verbal cues. How do you stand? How do you walk? Are you slouching? Do you give eye contact? Exude confidence with your non verbal cues. 5. Control the controllables! The more you focus on what’s out your control, you will start to feel less empowered. Intentional effort and attitude are so important. Otherwise you will always feel like you are lacking 6. The most confident people take control of their self image and rehearse it. You have to define what confidence means to you. No one else can choose that for you. Confidence is A SKILL. How to build your self image: Your self-image is the mental blueprint of who you are and it will either help you reach your potential or limit it. In his book psycho cybernetics Maxwell Maltz showed that we rarely achieve more than the version of ourselves we believe in. Carl Rogers emphasised that growth requires alignment between your real and ideal self. Change the self-image, and your performance follows. To build a strong self image: 1. Choose what you want your self image to reflect. Is it calm? ConFiendent? Brave? You get to choose!! Don’t let anyone else 2. Spend 3 mins 3 times a week visualising this self image. Connect to how they walk, talk, act and feel. Really add details. This is what rewires the brain and body. 3. Repeat repeat. Self image takes time to rewire but it’s worth it. If you want to learn even more I’ve written a big chapter in my book ‘VISUALISE’. It will take you through the exact visualisation to use as well. The relationship I have with my body, and my clothes, is still really complex… Like most, I am working on undoing years of harmful rhetoric and learning I am very happy now, but it’s taken an insane amount of work, mentally, physically, spiritually and socially. And I still have days where the work I’ve put in is just not enough to quiet my inner critic I WISH I had known to size up, go baggy, and ignore the size on the label so much earlier. If I’d have let go of flattering earlier, it would have saved me so much trauma, so much negative self image, and ultimately money… So let me be the one to tell you; baggy clothes are not the enemy, your clothes making you look as small as possible is not the goal, buying a bigger size does not undo your self worth, flattering is a concept you can let go of… If anything, buying a bigger size is what makes my wardrobe feel curated and cool because there’s more shape to play with!
