Now streaming from 2.5 million light-years away 🎶 By translating light into sound, astronomers turned data from some of the world’s most powerful telescopes, including NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory, into a new sonification of the Andromeda Galaxy. The Andromeda galaxy, also known as Messier 31 (M31), is the closest spiral galaxy to the Milky Way. M31 has played an important role in many aspects of astrophysics, but particularly in the discovery of dark matter. In this sonification, the layer from each telescope has been separated out and rotated so that they stack on top of each other horizontally, beginning with X-rays at the top and then moving through ultraviolet, optical, infrared, and radio at the bottom. As the scan moves from left to right in the sonification, each type of light is mapped to a different range of notes, from lower-energy radio waves up through the high energy of X-rays. So, here’s what’s actually happening. PlantWave measures tiny electrical signals in the plant. Those signals naturally rise and fall as the plant responds to light, touch, humidity, and movement. We graph those fluctuations as a wave. Then we translate that wave into pitch, and that pitch plays the instruments you hear in the video. Nothing is added. Finally, porting LHC sonification into an online, living instrument. Online : https://jeonghopark.de/lhc_js/ This project transforms a Higgs boson event recorded at CERN’s Large Hadron Collider into a real-time audiovisual composition. This work builds on an earlier version I developed in openFrameworks, which I later ported into a JavaScript-based online environment — extending it from a standalone system into an accessible, browser-based instrument. Each detected particle becomes a tone. Its measured energy is mapped to frequency — higher energy rises into brighter pitches, lower energy settles into darker resonances. Spatial coordinates from the detector shape the stereo field, so the geometry of the collision unfolds as sound. A particle collision is not chaos — it is structure at unimaginable scales. Every event carries a unique energy distribution and decay pattern, and therefore produces its own unrepeatable sonic texture — an acoustic fingerprint of matter in transformation. The Higgs boson does not appear directly. It reveals itself through traces, through decay products, through patterns hidden inside noise. Listen to one of the largest & brightest star formation regions near our Milky Way!🎧 This sonification of the spectacular cosmic vista that is 30 Doradus combines X-rays from @NASAChandraXray with infrared data from @NASAWebb. X-rays from Chandra reveal gas that has been superheated by shock waves generated by the winds from massive stars. Meanwhile, Webb’s infrared data show cooler gas that provides the raw ingredients for future stars. Visual Description: In this composite visualization, a field of stars is partially obscured by a red nebula of cosmic gas and dust, and bright blue X-ray clouds. Near the center of the visualization, a break in the nebula, ringed with wispy white clouds, reveals a brilliant gleaming star, and the central star cluster of 30 Doradus. A vertical line sweeps across the images from left to right, triggering musical sounds as different elements are encountered. The higher in the frame the element is, the higher the pitch of the sound. In the Chandra portion of the sonification, the mottled cloud of bright blue X-ray light is mapped to notes on an airy synthesizer. In the Webb Telescope infrared portion of the sonification, the red nebula is mapped to soft low musical pitches, and the wispy white cloud is mapped to harsh, high frequency, wind-like sounds. Stars are played on a piano-like synthesizer, with percussion triangles indicating diffraction spikes. A rain-stick represents stars belonging to the central cluster. 🤔What’s sonification?
