BIWe’ve had great luck growing our springtail colonies! Here’s how:
1. Once a week we open the culture box to circulate the air and make sure they don’t get gassed out!
2. We make sure the bin is about 1/2 way full with lump wood charcoal. This ensures lots of surface area for the springtails to move around and provide plenty of egg laying places.
3. Make sure there is at least 1” of standing water at the bottom of each bin.
4. We only feed the colonies 1x a week with our BioActive Supply Springtail and Isopod Diet. They love the food!

NAMost people don’t think the medium matters much when it comes to springtails… and to be fair, you can grow healthy colonies in a lot of different setups.
I’ve used coco coir, mixes, even clay, and they can all work really well when conditions are right. If moisture, feeding, and airflow are balanced, you might not run into any issues at all.
But over time I found myself preferring charcoal, and it took me a while to understand why.
At first it just feels simpler. But that simplicity changes how stable the system is. Charcoal is inert, so it doesn’t really break down. Which means you’re not constantly introducing new organic material into the setup.
And that matters, because in more organic substrates, even if everything is going well, the system is still slowly changing in the background.
Springtails do help control mold, but they’re reacting to it, not preventing the conditions that create it. With charcoal, there’s just less happening overall, so things tend to stay more predictable long term.
Another thing I personally like is visibility. The black background makes them stand out immediately. You can actually see population changes, and even spot babies without guessing.
So this isn’t about one method being right or wrong. Plenty of people have great results with coco coir and other mixes.
This is just what I’ve found to be the most consistent and low maintenance over time.
