ALSunset Strip in 1983 starting at Holloway Drive. Look at those tight early designer jeans crossing Sunset. I immediately think of Jordasche, Chemin de Fer, and Sergio Valente. The car then heads west past Tower Records. I could actually be inside getting Duran Duran’s latest LP, but I don’t see my mom’s two toned Chevy Caprice. Notice the painted adds for RIO and Lionel Ritchie’s debut solo albums. Thriller is on the lower half of the Marquee sign. New albums were put out on Tuesday
mornings, I believe.
As we keep driving you’ll also the old Shell Station and the Golden Carrot health food store .
The Whisky was painted black back then. Notice posters on the building for The Shining - although it was released 3 years before. I think it’s because the @thewhiskyagogo may have been shut down at this time.
Nice to see Gazzarri’s again and all that KMET signage. I would have been listening to KROQ back then, but seeing this reminded me how huge that station was at the time.
Moving along we see Gil Turners - one of the oldest, if not the oldest business still on the strip. I love seeing all the cars. In my fantasy mind, Prince is in that Lincoln Continental. Just wish it kept rolling past Hamburger Hamlet.
I grew up not far from here and today still live in the same neighborhood. It’s changed drastically and looks so much better without all the unsightly new construction that seems to never end. But, it still looks similar along this stretch.
This early VHS 📼 footage was taken by our dear friend, Phil Savenick, who passed on 2 years back. He always sent me the most incredible archives to share. We thought of adding music from 1983, but there is something about the real sounds being heard in this clip. Even the Strip sounded quieter then.
UPDATE: after reading all these interesting comments we do believe that the year is actually 82. You’re all great history sleuths!
