People still call it “Drownload.” Middle of that, Soundgarden go out and play one of their most awkward songs live like it’s nothing. 15/8 time signature. Not something bands usually throw into a festival set in front of tens of thousands. The song comes off Superunknown. It wasn’t a major single, but it’s one of their most technical tracks. That off-time groove never really settles, and Kim Thayil’s tuning gives it that dragging, almost uneasy feel the whole way through. It’s the kind of song that sounds controlled on record and risky live. Chris Cornell is 47 here. Voice is rougher than ’94 but still lands everything. No drop tuning, no shortcuts. They run it straight through, then hand the stage over to Black Sabbath like it’s a normal transition. This wasn’t a reunion band coasting.
