Ever wondered how your brain sends messages faster than the blink of an eye? 🤔 This incredible process is called Synaptic Transmission. 🧬 Here is the breakdown: It starts with an electrical impulse called the Action Potential. This triggers the entry of Calcium ions. Finally, Neurotransmitters are released into the microscopic gap known as the Synaptic Cleft. This "chemical talk" is what allows you to think, move, and feel everything! ✨ Follow for more biology made simple! ✅ #brain#instagram #synagogue #synapse #impulse

Did you know that the human brain contains approximately 100 billion microscopic cells called neurons—roughly the same number of stars in the Milky Way? Synapses are essential for neuronal function. If neurons are cells specialized in transmitting signals to individual target cells, synapses are the means by which they do so. When a nerve signal reaches the end of a neuron, it cannot simply continue on to the next cell. Instead, it must trigger the release of neurotransmitters, which carry the impulse across the synapse to the next neuron. Once a nerve impulse has triggered the release of neurotransmitters, these chemical messengers traverse the tiny synaptic cleft and are picked up by receptors on the surface of the next cell. DAY 5: NEURONS, SYNAPSES and 3 TYPES of GLIA, & WHAT THEY DO. _ As you may recall (see days 1,2) synapses are the spaces between neurons where they communicate with each other by releasing chemicals that shift electricity (day 4). _ Surrounding that synapse space are a glial cell type called astrocytes. _ The glial cells along the length of the neurons (away from synapses) are called oligodendrocytes and Schwann cells and they both make myelin (more on myelin soon). _ CNS = Central nervous system. PNS= Peripheral nervous system. More on what these are in the next post. _ If this seems too advanced please see days 1-4! (15sec each). Even if you get a fraction of what’s in each post you’re learning and moving ahead. Starting at around day 30 of #100daysofneuroscience we will bridge into larger concepts and diseases and tools. Know this: **An understanding of the parts list of the nervous system and how your brain works, will afford you a great advantage in understanding later material and in applying any practical tools you encounter here or otherwise.** _ So hang in there; we are building up the foundation. #crawlwalkrun _ Best way to retain information: teach someone else. _ @hubermanlab @stanford.med @stanford @nihgov @nimhgov @societyforneuroscience @harvardchansph @harvardmed _ #science #neuroscience #ciencia #neurociencia #oligodendrocyte #astrocyte #publiceducation #brain #synapse #glia #myelin #multiplesclerosis

Synaptic transmission is the process by which one neuron communicates with another. It typically occurs at a specialized junction called a synapse. The synapse consists of three main components: the presynaptic terminal (from the sending neuron), the synaptic cleft (a tiny gap between neurons), and the postsynaptic membrane (on the receiving neuron). When an electrical impulse, or action potential, travels down the axon of a neuron and reaches the presynaptic terminal, it triggers the opening of voltage-gated calcium channels. Calcium ions (Ca²⁺) then rush into the presynaptic terminal. This influx of calcium causes synaptic vesicles, which are small membrane-bound structures filled with neurotransmitters, to move toward and fuse with the presynaptic membrane. Once fused, these vesicles release neurotransmitters (such as dopamine, serotonin, or acetylcholine) into the synaptic cleft. These chemical messengers diffuse across the cleft and bind to specific receptors on the postsynaptic membrane. This binding can result in the opening or closing of ion channels on the postsynaptic neuron, leading to either excitation or inhibition of the receiving neuron. The process is rapid and occurs within milliseconds, allowing the brain and nervous system to process and relay information efficiently. After transmission, neurotransmitters are typically removed from the synaptic cleft through reuptake, enzymatic degradation, or diffusion, ensuring the signal is brief and regulated. Synaptic turnover in the spine 🧠 The synapses that form the connections between neurons in our brains are always changing. This is known as ‘synaptic turnover’, and allows us to continuously acquire information and store it in the form of memory. However, despite these changes to the “communication bridges” in our brain, its function remains largely the same. Scientists in this study sought to explore how the brain manages to maintain its stability and information retention in the face of synaptic turnover. Specifically, the team developed a model to examine local synaptic turnover, or plasticity, by studying spontaneously evolving spines and observing the effects of stimulation on synapses. They found that stimulation led to a significant shift in the network, improving its ability to carry information – this effect, however, was short-lived. The team suggests that synaptic fluctuations and randomness, such as those exhibited by the spine, give our brains a cost-effective method of freeing up space by degrading the memories and skills we don’t use. This research was published in Communications Biology. Maximilian Eggl and Tatjana Chumatchenko explain more in the Neuroscience Community.
o an beynin yeni bir sinaps kurar.
