HOW TO MIX DRUMS LIKE THIS
1. Choose high-quality sounds. VST’s such as Kontakt (Teletone Audio Tympo as used here) & Addictive Drums are great alternatives to .wav sounds for creating realistic and performative drums loops like this one.
2. Parallel Compression is what I typically use to treat these aggressive and performative drum sounds as it gives drums a much more powerful & ‘in your face’ feeling.
Plugins like CLA-76 from Waves as well as many other FET style compressors do a great job.
If you are unfamiliar with how to achieve Parallel Compression in your DAW just YouTube search ‘NY Style Compression’.
3. Tape Saturation is my final step in mixing these types of sounds just to take it one step further with texture and grit.
My personal favourite recently is Slate Digitals Virtual Tape Machines but there are many other free and paid alternatives that will achieve a very similar result.
