DAPercussion balls, most commonly known as the kashaka (also called aslatua, asalato, cas cas, or televi), are a traditional hand percussion instrument originating from West Africa, particularly regions like Senegal, Ghana, and Mali. They consist of two small hollow gourds (often from the Oncoba spinosa tree) or wooden shells filled with seeds, beans, or pebbles and connected by a short string. One gourd is held in the palm while the other is swung around the hand to create sharp “clack” impacts when they collide, combined with shaking sounds for rhythmic textures. In African music, they add polyrhythmic layers, intricate clicks, and subtle shakers to ensembles, supporting complex grooves in traditional folk, griot storytelling, and communal celebrations. Skilled players manipulate tension on the string and finger catches to produce fast, hypnotic patterns that enhance the overall percussive drive central to West African rhythms.
