CAI was wishing winter away today. My hands had gone completely white again from the cold, Raynaud’s doing what it always does this time of year, and I made an offhand comment about it to the guy at the checkout in M&S, “I can’t wait until it starts to get warmer”, when he looked up and said, “I know… but we shouldn’t wish it away.”
It caught me off guard, because it was quietly true. We spend so much of our lives wishing time forward, wishing seasons to end, wishing ourselves into a future version of life where things feel easier, warmer, calmer, better. We tell ourselves we’ll enjoy things more then, when the next phase arrives, when the discomfort passes.
But longevity, real longevity, isn’t just about adding years to a life. It’s about being present for the one you’re living. In the longest-living communities in the world, purpose and gratitude aren’t just concepts or motivational affirmations; they’re woven into daily life in ordinary, unremarkable ways. Not by pretending everything is perfect, but by recognising that even the inconvenient moments count, even the cold mornings and numb fingers and small exchanges with strangers.
Standing there, hands slowly warming as the blood returned, I realised how often we rush ourselves through our own lives without meaning to. We don’t need to fully love every part, but we do need to stop trying to skip them, and remember each moment is important in some way. Because a life you don’t constantly wish away is one you get to fully live in, and that, in the end, might be one of the most powerful habits for a long and meaningful life.

Hana-Rawhiti Maipi-Clarke is a New Zealand politician and a member of Te Pāti Māori. She became the Member of Parliament for Hauraki-Waikato in the 2023 general election, making her one of the youngest MPs in New Zealand’s history. She unseated long-serving MP Nanaia Mahuta to win the seat.
Maipi-Clarke comes from a strong Māori activist background and has whakapapa from Waikato, Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Porou, Te Āti Awa, and Ngāi Tahu. Her family has been deeply involved in Māori rights and cultural advocacy, and her grandfather, Taitimu Maipi, was an activist. Her father, Potaka Maipi, is a well-known broadcaster, and her grand-aunt, Hana Te Hemara, was a Māori language advocate.
Before entering politics, she attended Te Wharekura o Rākaumangamanga in Huntly. She has been actively involved in Māori language and cultural preservation, and she published a book on maramataka (the Māori lunar calendar). She has also provided training on maramataka, including to the New Zealand Warriors rugby players.
Since becoming an MP, Maipi-Clarke has focused on advocating for Māori rights, youth engagement, environmental issues, and the promotion of Māori culture. She gained attention in 2024 after performing a haka in Parliament in protest against the controversial Treaty Principles Bill. Maipi-Clarke is part of a new generation of Māori leaders and is known for her outspoken and passionate approach to policy, particularly regarding Indigenous rights.#

A mom filmed her 12-year-old son, Max, sitting in the car after a youth soccer tournament as he tried to explain why he was crying.
In the video, Max says players from another team called him an “illegal immigrant” and told him President Donald Trump would “send him back.” Through tears, he tells his mom he was born in the United States.
His mother later shared the video online, saying she wanted to show how deeply words can affect children. The soccer facility involved has said it is investigating what happened.
The video has since spread widely across social media, including reposts from public figures such as Cory Booker.

Most vivid dreams occur during REM sleep, a stage where brain activity is almost as active as when you’re awake. During this stage, the brain areas responsible for emotions, especially the amygdala, are highly active, which is why dreams can feel intense or threatening.
When something frightening happens in a dream, your brain can trigger a rapid spike in alertness. Your heart rate increases, stress hormones rise, and your brain essentially flips from REM sleep to full wakefulness. This protective response is similar to a fight-or-flight reaction, which is why people often wake up right at the scariest moment.
Researchers have found that nightmares are especially common during the second half of the night, when REM sleep periods get longer. That’s why many people remember waking up suddenly from a nightmare, often with their heart racing and the dream still feeling incredibly real.
