Delayed Dates: This transition can result in a postmark dated 1–2 days after the actual drop-off, which may be longer during weekends or holidays.
Legal Impact: This change specifically impacts items with hard deadlines where the postmark serves as legal proof of on-time filing, such as tax returns, mail-in ballots, and bill payments.
How to Ensure an On-Time Postmark
To avoid potential late fees or missed deadlines, the USPS and state officials recommend the following:
Request a Manual Postmark: Take your mail directly to a USPS Retail Location counter and ask a clerk to hand-stamp it on the day of mailing.
Mail Early: Send critical documents at least one week before their deadline to account for transportation to regional centers.
Purchase Proof of Mailing: Use Certified Mail or a Certificate of Mailing to obtain official documentation of when the USPS took possession of the item.

That change means that your mail may not get a postmark on the same day you drop it off in the mailbox or at the post office. It could come the day after or even a few days after. While USPS says postmarks have “always” worked that way, the reality is, the US government, the courts, the IRS and all of us for decades have had a completely different perception of postmarks.
