Dealing with weak/tight hamstrings?? Give these 4 exercises a try! 1️⃣ Long lever explosive glute bridge. Try to lift your hips as fast as you can then slowly lower. You can add a light weight across your hips when this gets easy but don’t go too heavy as speed is key here! 3 X 8. 2️⃣ Nordic hamstring curls. Try to lower slowly over at least 3 seconds. Hook your feet under something heavy or get a partner to hold your ankles down. 3 X 6. 3️⃣ Bridge switch kicks. These are harder than they look! Make sure you have adequate hamstring strength before giving this one a try. As you get stronger you can build up the speed. 4️⃣ RDLs Doing deadlifts, specifically Romanian deadlifts can load the posterior chain nicely. You ideally progress from dumbbells to a bar/plates so you can really go heavy with this one. Try these 2-3 times/week depending on where you are in your racing season! #strengthtrainingforrunners #hamstringworkout #hamstringrehab #injuryprevention #runningphysio

✨Runners, if you have consistent tightness or pain in your hamstrings during or after runs then you need to focus on strengthening them! 🧠 When a muscle is weak our nervous system likes to keep that muscle in a state of increased tone as a way to stabilize and protect. Also, if your hamstrings are not prepared for the amount of load you are placing on them during a run then this could lead to them feeling tight and fatigued during a run. Try these 3 exercises to improve hamstring strength & tightness! 1. Single leg RDLs (if this are too difficult start with B stance RDLs): RDL variations are great for strengthening the hamstrings and also improving hamstring mobility. I recommend trying to sets of 8 reps. 2. Long lever bridge with elevated leg: this exercise is great for improving strength both proximally & distally. I recommend trying 3 sets of 8-10 reps each leg. 3. Banded hamstring PNF: PNF exercises use a contract/relax method that can decrease the sensation of “tightness” in the muscle. PNF training is not the best option for building strength, but when combined with strength training it can be very beneficial. I recommend trying 3 sets of 10 reps each leg. Strong quads help your knee track properly and absorb load. ✨ Weak hamstrings. They protect the knee by balancing the forces from your quads. Think of them as the knee’s safety net! ✨ Poor hip control. Your hips guide your knee. Weak or immobile hips can make your knee collapse inward and take extra stress. (Remember they move in 7 different ways!) ✨ Weak ankles & calves. These are your first line of impact absorption. If they aren’t strong or mobile enough, the knee ends up taking the hit. ✨ Too much impact, too fast like jumping into high mileage or high impact activities without prep overloads the knee.
