1. Over explaining
You think you’re making sure everyone understands. But repeating and expanding your point erodes clarity and authority.
Clarity is kind. Make your point and let it land.
2. Over qualifying
“I could be wrong…”
“Maybe I missed something, but…”
It sounds humble. But weakening your message before anyone hears it lowers your authority and makes the conversation less clear for others.
True politeness is respecting other’s time and attention by getting right to the point.
3. Talking about how busy you are
“I’m so slammed right now.”
“Things are just crazy.”
It sounds transparent. But everyone is “busy” and oversharing your overwhelm doesn’t improve anyone’s experience of the conversation.
Good etiquette keeps the focus on the conversation, not your stress.
4. Over apologizing
“Sorry to bother you.”
“Sorry if this is a dumb question.”
Constant apologies frame your presence as an interruption and make others responsible for reassuring you.
Politeness is the discernment to bring things up when they’re worthy of being brought up, without diminishing yourself.
5. Explaining every decision
Some people feel the need to justify every step. But long un-solicited explanations slow the conversation and dilute the message.
Good etiquette means respecting people’s time by keeping it brief.
6. Asking permission instead of making a recommendation
“Do you want me to…?”
“Should I…?”
It sounds deferential. But constantly asking instead of recommending places the burden of thinking back on the other person.
Thoughtful professionals offer a clear path forward.
7. Softening every statement
People often add extra language to avoid sounding too direct. But excessive cushioning makes understanding harder for everyone.
Clear, respectful statements are both more effective and more courteous.
Politeness is not about shrinking yourself. It is about clarity, composure, and consideration for the people you are speaking with.
