Do you know what EMDR is?
This is what EMDR treatment can look like when using eye movements and/or bilateral sounds through the ears. Nothing else quite hits like EMDR. It stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — a unique and powerful treatment for dealing with disturbing life experiences, often using rapid eye movements.
EMDR is one of the most effective therapies out there, with over 35 years of scientific research behind it. Resaerch shows it can often lead to noticeable improvements faster than many other therapies. It helps the brain reprocess trauma and is used for PTSD, phobias, anxiety, panic, anger, grief — things that have overwhelmed the brain and made you feel like danger is still present.
A lot of people experience powerful, even unexpected, changes through EMDR. If you’re interested, have a look at EMDR Association UK or EMDRIA for international providers. Just a heads up — there are some unqualified or poorly trained practitioners out there, so make sure anyone you see has been trained by the organisations listed on those pages. #emdr #emdrtherapy #emdrtherapist #traumahealing #traumatherapy #anxiety #panicattacks #healthanxiety

EMDR therapy is often described as more than exposure. Emerging neuroscience suggests that when a memory is reactivated, it can enter a temporary state of malleability — a process known as memory reconsolidation (Nader & Hardt, 2009; Haubrich & Nader, 2016). During EMDR, a distressing memory is held in mind while attention is simultaneously engaged through bilateral stimulation. Because working memory has limited capacity, this dual engagement appears to reduce the vividness and emotional intensity of the recalled memory (Lee & Cuijpers, 2013). Neuroimaging research further shows that after successful EMDR treatment, patterns of neural activation shift. Studies report decreased activation in limbic regions associated with threat and emotional reactivity (such as the amygdala) and increased engagement of prefrontal cortical regions involved in regulation, integration, and cognitive control (Pagani et al., 2015; Boukezzi et al., 2017; Landin-Romero et al., 2018). These findings align with broader models of systems consolidation, in which memories become more integrated within cortical networks over time rather than remaining predominantly limbically driven. Whether EMDR operates primarily through reconsolidation, working memory taxation, orienting responses, or overlapping mechanisms remains under active investigation. What is well supported is its clinical efficacy for PTSD and trauma-related distress. The science continues to evolve. But attention, memory activation, and neural integration are not separate processes — they are deeply interconnected. Note: EMDR is a structured psychotherapy and should only be conducted by a licensed, trained clinician. The equipment alone is not the treatment. Proper assessment, preparation, and stabilization — especially when dissociation is present — are essential for safe and effective trauma processing. References in comments. Does it ever feel like the trauma you experienced happened just yesterday (regardless of how long ago it was)? This is super common with trauma. One of my favorite parts of EMDR is allowing the unconscious mind to know that the trauma really is over & you are safe now. You can switch over to rest & digest and finally get out of fight/flight/freeze. Our narratives shift a lot after EMDR & there’s so much freedom that comes from that. It was a bad time 🥺 ➡️ I survived 🥹 #emdr #emdrtherapy #ptsd #cptsd #anxiety #sarasota #therapist #florida #therapy #mentalhealth

Note: your therapist should actually make sure you’re good/regulated before leaving session 😂 EMDR can feel so powerful—and clients often leave thinking, ‘Well… I didn’t see that coming.’ Here’s why this happens👇🏼 EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) taps into how your brain stores memories—especially the tough ones your nervous system has been holding onto. Even if you think you don’t have much to process that day, your brain knows where the unprocessed stuff is hiding. In session, the bilateral stimulation (eye movements, tapping, or sounds) helps your brain connect the dots between that time you felt shamed for getting a B on a test and why you struggle with perfectionism today. Suddenly, you’re unpacking thoughts, feelings, and body sensations that were quietly influencing how you show up in daily life. If you’ve ever underestimated what you were carrying, EMDR might just surprise you in the best way to help you remove the burden that’s weighed you down. 🧠✨ If this is you and you’re ready to unpack that griefcase you’ve been carting around, book a call with me to get started! 🙋🏼‍♀️ (link in bio) • • • & be sure to follow @theemdrhealingpractice for more on EMDR therapy and trauma healing✨

! The most satisfying feeling! In EMDR therapy, a “target” is a memory or experience that still holds emotional charge often linked to trauma, anxiety, or negative beliefs about yourself. Completing a target doesn’t erase the past, but it does change how your body and brain relate to it. You may notice you feel lighter, clearer, or more like yourself again. That’s the power of processing: your nervous system finally realizing: It’s over. You’re safe now. 🌀 Curious if EMDR could help you let go of what’s been holding you back? You’re not alone—and you don’t have to carry it forever. #EMDRTherapy #TraumaHealing #Therapisthumor #therapistmemes #HealingIsPossible #YouAreNotBroken #BodyMindHealing

What a journey this is going to be… Yesterday I had my first ever EMDR therapy session and I filmed this video as soon as I got out! I shared it to my story but I’ve decided to start documenting my journey properly on the grid too. With my accident, not remembering parts, I’m done with not knowing the truth and I’m keen to try understand what properly happened to me. There is a chance it will never come back to me but at the very least, I’ll get to work through my PTSD - which has been increasing over the past year. It will certainly not be easy but I constantly want to better myself, heal from any traumas and this is just the next step in the process. The timing feels right, as does sharing this journey with you all. I hope to help and inspire any of you to face any traumas or struggles you’re facing. Plus, going to therapy is the most incredible thing and talking about your struggles openly is so important. Things always have to be tough before they get better right! Thank you so much for all the support I’ve had already too - it means the absolute world. I’m so grateful to every single one of you and thank you for allowing me to feel so safe💘 I hope you’re all having the most wonderful day! Lots of love xxx
