@crossfittraining One of the core lectures offered at the CrossFit Level 1 Seminar introduces CrossFit’s definition of fitness as “your work capacity across broad time and modal domains.” This definition means that fitness is measurable and can be quantified by plotting your training results — such as times, loads, and reps or rounds — on a line graph. With power output on the Y-axis and duration of effort on the X-axis, you can plot the power output for any given effort. By measuring your power output across several efforts (for example, four efforts each lasting about 10 seconds), you can find an average. Repeat this process for efforts lasting 30 seconds, 2 minutes, 10 minutes, 20 minutes, and so on. Once you plot these data points, you create a visual representation — a graph— of your individual fitness. The person with the greatest area under the curve is considered the fittest. The good news is that you don’t have to graph every data point to track your fitness. Simply reviewing your training log and observing trends — such as lifting heavier loads, completing workouts faster, or achieving more rounds/reps are all clear indicators of improved fitness.
