In a large U.S. population study, adults with stronger quads scored higher on memory, attention, and processing speed, while lower strength was more common in those with cognitive impairment (McGrath et al., 2015 – NHANES). Other longitudinal research suggests that muscle strength (not just muscle mass) is associated with a lower risk of cognitive decline and dementia—even when accounting for age and physical activity levels (Boyle et al., 2009; Buchman et al., 2018). Why this matters: Strength reflects nervous system health, vascular function, and how well the brain and body communicate. Muscle contraction also releases myokines, which play a role in reducing inflammation and supporting brain health (Pedersen & Febbraio, 2012). This isn’t about aesthetics. It’s about longevity.
