If you ever see a shark in the ocean, the worst thing you could do would be to run away from it. Running from a shark triggers a predatory response in them and makes them feel like you are prey. If you stand your ground, make eye contact, and remain calm, this will drastically reduce your chances of continuing to get approached by the shark. If you absolutely needed to as a last resort if the shark is too close, you can firmly place your hand on top of the shark’s head and guide them away from you. Bull sharks are one of the most intense shark species I’ve ever worked with. Remember that time . . . back in 2016, before cages were redesigned and regulations were looser than they are today? Milana, a 13–15 ft great white, decided she wanted inside the cage. This all happened in under 50 seconds. It starts when she bites the air supply to a cage 40 ft down, triggering a burst of bubbles. She swims through it, passes beneath us, then turns and comes straight back . . . nose-diving into the upper cage. Inside are dive guide Yann, my friend Kate, and two divers below. Yann and Kate press themselves against the bars just in time. One powerful flick of her tail and Milana wedges herself between the bars. Then everything changes. She flips upside down and goes into tonic immobility—a trance-like state that stops her from thrashing. That moment likely saved her life. What you might miss: the crew is already lifting the cage—carefully keeping it submerged and clear of the boat. Everyone stayed calm. Everyone stayed safe. Milana made it out. It’s a metal detector with teeth. And it just found a target. This is a Great Hammerhead Shark hunting a Southern Stingray in the Bahamas. We used a 360-degree underwater drone to capture the unique "Pinning" behavior of this critically endangered predator. The Physics of the Hammer: Why the weird head? The Pin: Watch at 0:02. The shark uses its "Cephalofoil" (the hammer) to physically pin the stingray to the sand. It creates a mechanical advantage, holding the prey down while the underslung jaw takes a bite. Electro-Reception: The wide head is covered in pores called Ampullae of Lorenzini. By spreading them out, the shark gets a wider scan range to detect the electrical heartbeat of a stingray buried under the sand. Lift: The head also acts like a hydrofoil (wing), giving the shark exceptional maneuverability to turn on a dime. Conservation Status: Critically Endangered. These sharks are heavily targeted for their large fins. Coolest shark shape?
