One thing I see constantly with ADHD kids is a powerful sensitivity to unfairness. They notice when rules change. They notice when someone gets treated differently. They notice when something doesn’t feel right. And when they notice it… their nervous system reacts fast and big. Adults often interpret this as: • arguing • being dramatic • being disrespectful But many times it’s actually a child with a very strong internal compass for fairness. The challenge isn’t that they care. The challenge is that ADHD brains struggle with emotional regulation, so those feelings can come out explosively. Our job isn’t to shut that down. It’s to help them learn what to do with it. And honestly… the world needs more people who care when something isn’t fair. So tell me 👇 Does your ADHD child react strongly when something feels unfair? #adhdparenting #adhdkids #adhdmom #adhdawareness #neurodivergentkids

Some of the behaviours that stretch us the most as parents are actually signs our kids with ADHD are doing better than we think. Here are 5 “annoying” behaviours that often signal growth ⬇️ 1️⃣ Talking constantly or narrating everything For many kids with ADHD, this is a sign they feel safe, connected, and regulated enough to share their thoughts. When they’re overwhelmed, they often go quiet or shut down. 2️⃣ Asking the same questions again and again This isn’t ignoring or pushing buttons. ADHD affects working memory, so kids often need to re-check information to feel secure and oriented. 3️⃣ Big emotional reactions to small things Strong emotional expression can mean your child feels safe enough to let those feelings out. Suppressing emotions takes more regulation than expressing them. 4️⃣ Pushing back, saying “no,” or questioning rules This often reflects growing self-awareness and autonomy. ADHD kids who are constantly controlled may comply - but at the cost of confidence and self-trust. 5️⃣ Hyperfocusing on intense or “weird” interests This is how ADHD brains learn best. Interest-based focus builds competence, motivation, and self-esteem - even if it doesn’t look productive to adults. None of this means parenting is easy. And none of it means you should ignore limits or boundaries. But when we understand the why behind behaviour, we can respond with support instead of shame - and regulation instead of escalation. That’s exactly what Taming Big Emotions is designed to help with. Inside the course, you’ll learn how to: • respond to big emotions in the moment • reduce power struggles and emotional blow-ups • support your child’s nervous system first • build emotional regulation skills that grow over time 👉 Taming Big Emotions is linked in my bio. You’re not failing. You’re parenting a developing nervous system - and that’s hard work 💛

Think your child is being difficult? Many behaviors in ADHD kids, like hyperfocusing, interrupting, meltdowns, avoidance, and constant movement are actually their brain’s way of coping. Instead of criticizing, try staying calm, getting curious, and creating small, predictable steps. Understanding these behaviors changes everything. Parenting an ADHD child when you are already overstimulated can feel like instant chaos and there is real brain science behind it. When ADHD kids get overwhelmed, their nervous system looks for regulation. One of the fastest ways is verbal stimming. Talking nonstop, making noises, repeating phrases, or asking rapid questions increases dopamine and helps their brain feel safer and more organized. At the same time, an overstimulated parent has a nervous system that is already at capacity. The auditory input piles up. Cortisol rises. The brain shifts into threat mode. What looks like defiance or chaos is actually two nervous systems dysregulated at the same time. This is not bad behavior. It is unmet regulation needs colliding. Lowering your own stimulation first changes everything. Fewer words. Softer tone. Less correction. More rhythm and predictability. When the adult nervous system calms, the ADHD brain can borrow that calm and the verbal stimming naturally decreases. You are not failing. Your child is not broken. Your nervous systems just need support. If this resonates, you are not alone and there are tools that actually work. Comment CALL ☎️ for a free discovery session for adhd coaching.

Teachers see the version of ADHD kids that’s trying their hardest to hold it together. Parents see what happens when their nervous system finally runs out of energy. It’s called after-school restraint collapse. The meltdown isn’t because they suddenly decided to behave badly. It’s because their brain spent the entire day trying to keep it together. So when they finally get somewhere safe… everything they were holding in finally comes out. ADHD parents know this moment immediately.

Parenting a child with autism or ADHD isn’t about doing it wrong. It’s about learning what actually works for their nervous system. 💛 Even with the best intentions, we can accidentally trigger the very behaviors we are trying to reduce. Here are 5 common pitfalls and what to try instead: 1️⃣ Giving long, detailed instructions Neurodivergent brains can get overwhelmed quickly. Use short, clear directions and break tasks into small, manageable steps. 2️⃣ Inconsistency with rules or expectations Predictability creates safety. Consistent routines, rules, and follow-through help kids feel secure and reduce anxiety-driven behaviors. 3️⃣ Focusing mostly on what’s “wrong” Many autistic and ADHD kids hear far more corrections than encouragement. Notice effort, celebrate progress, and name what is going well to build confidence. 4️⃣ Expecting instant compliance Transitions are challenging. Give advance warnings like “5 minutes left,” use visual timers, and allow extra processing time. 5️⃣ Reacting strongly during meltdowns Meltdowns are not misbehavior. They are signs of nervous system overload. Staying calm and regulated yourself helps them regulate faster. ✨ You are not failing. You are learning. 👉 What part of this surprised you the most? Follow @parenthoodunboxed The biggest mistake many parents make with ADHD is expecting a child to thrive in a setup that gives little to no immediate feedback. ADHD often impacts executive function, so the “do it now because it matters later” motivation system does not fire the same way. It is not laziness. It is wiring. That is why a child can lock in on a video game for hours but stall on homework after a few minutes. Games deliver instant responses and clear outcomes. Worksheets do not. ADHD kids do best with structure that makes feedback fast and external. Clear cues. Quick check ins. Small rewards. Immediate course correction. This is not about willpower or being defiant. It is a neurogenetic executive function gap, and it makes supportive, consistent parenting both harder and even more important. Follow @parenthoodunboxed Video: ADHDtips Credit: Dr. Russell Barkley
